As part of my Valentine's Day celebration, I am offering up love songs from some of my favorite artists. For me, Levi Kreis was the best thing to come out of 'The Apprentice'. I happened to be watching during season 4, and saw this independent artist featured on a task. I like him so much, I did some research, and soon had his album 'One of the Ones' in my collection. I've been hooked since. With every release, my collection became a little bit deeper. That includes his album released in 2013, 'Imagine Paradise'. It had a higher energy quotient than the previous albums, fusing R&B, Dance and Pop with a light touch. To help celebrate this holiday, I bring you "Love Revolution (Golishevsky Remix)" for your listening pleasure.

Music to Kick Off Your Weekend
Clockwise: Ryan Dolan, SIRPAUL & Loco Ninja, Sam Smith, and Levi Kreis & QBoy.
I am not sure if it was lack of imagination, or just a real interest in a couple of artists, but whatever it was, I decided to take a look at some more music from a couple of artists that were recently featured on the blog. I will start with the handsome Irishman I only recently discovered with his beautiful ballad, "Start Again". It was that song and music video that brought me to the other music from Ryan Dolan, the out and proud singer/songwriter. One of those songs was "Only Love Survives", which also happened to be Ireland's entry for Eurovision 2013. It has become a favorite for me, and I am so pleased to share it with you now. This is Ryan Dolan with "Only Love Survives".
You can find Ryan Dolan's "Only Love Survives" on iTunes and Amazon. Earlier this week, I brought you the latest music video from SIRPAUL, the scintillating "Black Leather". I swear, I broke into a sweat while watching that one. It made me think about his 2012 hit single, "Body Connection". SIRPAUL was joined on this song by the talented Loco Ninja, who added a great rap to the production. The song was also featured on SIRPAUL's album, 'The Horse'. This is SIRPAUL featuring Loco Ninja with the song and video for "Body Connection".
You can find the "Body Connection" single on iTunes and Amazon. In another recent post, I featured a new single from gay British Rapper/Hip-Hop artist QBoy, and I was thrilled to hear some new music from the talented man. It made me think of the great single from the über-talented Levi Kreis, "Love Revolution". S=The song appeared on Kries' 2013 release, 'Imagine Paradise', and later was released as a single that helped raise money for the Kentucky-based 'Positively Living' group. While Kreis delivered the song and his usual magnificent performance, he brought in QBoy to collaborate, and it was something special. This is Levi Kreis featuring QBoy with the song "Love Revolution (Louis The Child Remix)".
You can find "Love Revolution" as part of a collection of remixes on iTunes and Amazon. At the end of last year, I started reading great things about a British singer I knew nothing about. So I did a bit of research, and soon discovered his 2013 EP, 'Nirvana'. I loved it, and eagerly looked for more. It was then I found the 2013 single from Naughty Boy "La La La", which featured vocals from Smith. Sam added a wonderful soulful feel to the recording, and I could not hear it enough. This is Naughty Boy with "La La La", featuring Sam Smith.
You can find "La La La" on iTunes and Amazon. Have a great weekend!

Levi Kreis • Love Revolution: The Remixes
Top: Handsome men Levi Kreis, left, and QBoy, right.
Levi Kreis has released a set of remixes for one of the hot songs off his latest album, 'Imagine Paradise'. On the album, Levi collaborates with British Rapper QBoy, ending up with an energetic and sexy song. And if having Levi and QBoy together isn't sexy enough for anyone, you know what ups the ante here? Levi has released an eight-track Remix collection that is now available. I've heard it, and it is wonderful. It is perfect for your workout playlist, kicking off your weekend, or just to satisfy your aural needs. And, if you buy it between now and November 4, 2013, 100% of the money will go to Positively Living, a Knoxville, Tennessee-based charity.
Positively Living is a not-for-profit service agency that provides housing and care for persons that are homeless and suffering from HIV/AIDS, mental illness, addiction, or physical disability. Life has not been great for LGBT residents of Tennessee, who has seen some of the most hurtful anti-gay legislation, at a time when many states are making the dream of equality a reality. Levi was raised in Eastern Tennessee, and knew the hardships of growing up in an environment of bullying, religious persecution, and attempts at ex-gay therapy. After fighting that and addiction issue, Levi found his way to sobriety and a new life, one that included being an out and proud gay man making music, and winning a Tony Award for his first show on Broadway. Now Levi has the opportunity to offer back to the community, to offer a hand to the LGBT adults and youth, he is stepping up to the plate. All the money for purchases of 'Love Revolution: The Remixes' from BandCamp will be going to Positively Living. While you ponder that act of altruism, give a listen to one of the tracks from the collection, "Love Revolution (Golishevsky Remix)".
'Love Revolution: The Remixes' is available on BandCamp. If you click on "Buy Now", you can name the amount of money that will be given to Positively Living. So between now and November 4th, you have the opportunity to get some great music, and make the lives of some folks just a little bit better. That sounds like a win-win to me! For more about Levi Kreis, visit his official website. You can also 'follow' him on Twitter, and 'like' him on Facebook. To learn about QBoy, visit his official website, 'follow' him on Twitter, and 'like' him on Facebook. I am sure both would appreciate hearing from you, so feel free to do so!

Levi Kreis • Imagine Paradise
It seems like it has been quite a while since Levi Kreis set out to make a new album. First he had to do his homework, and which was everything from beginning to write new songs to come up with budgets and schedules or the project. He then set up a crowd-funding project to get fans and friends involved. With his Kickstarter page up, he raised more than his desired goal, leaving many, including myself, happy and excited about the prospect of new music. And if you look closely at the album cover above, Levi has brought most of the donors with him on the cover shoot, as he had the names written on his remarkably fit naked body, highlighting the people who helped make the album happen. And when there is a naked picture of Levi on the cover, it becomes a bit more interesting to 'Imagine Paradise', doesn't it? And when there are two naked pictures - check out the back cover below - picking up 'Imagine Paradise' and playing it is quite the inviting prospect!
The first cut starts off this journey just a little steamy, with Levi cooing and whispering in my ear on "Timeless (We Are)". There is something so very honest about this song, and it s one that should be heard. Check out this live acoustic performance from Levi's appearance on 'Feast of Fun', Fausto Fernós' and Marc Felion's wonderful podcast.
On the second track, Levi turns up the energy, and drives it home with a strong beat. "Any Way You Wanna" takes on love, and we know love wins, don't we? It certainly does when Levi has anything to do with it. Next up, "Taking Back My Boogie" comes busting through giving me The Sound of Philadelphia realness, some of that Gamble & Huff magic. There is nothing but love and joy in this one, and I just can't get enough. "All Over Again" slows it up, but nothing can hold back Levi's voice. There is a connection between Levi and the soulfulness inherent to the song. And once you have fallen, what is the next step? Of course, it is finding that "Deeper Love" we all want so bad. To get there, Levi amps up the energy, but gives us a bit of Nile Rodgers, melding the soul and dance with a smooth and loving caress. That pretty much only leaves room for a "Love Revolution", a dance explosion featuring QBoy. This song is just so shimmery and juicy, it is hard to resist. And when QBoy breaks in, offering a delicious slice of his UK Homo-Hop, I know I am in love. That leads us to the sexy beast that is "4 Letter Word". Levi's vocals are just so on for this, I am at a loss for words. But I want him to sing this so me several times. Finally, we get to the first official single off the album. This is the official music video for "So Much Better", so please enjoy it.
I love "So Much Better", so filled with joy and hope, all with a kick ass track underneath it. That is followed up by "Never Will I", which gives me a shot of Janet Jackson, a softness with a strong sense of love. There is just a great warmth in the song, and Levi's voice is like honey as it navigates the song. There is a simple piano introduction to "It Ain't Over", quickly joined by Levi improvising as the song starts up. He is joined in this duet by the amazing Sam Harris, who I remember so clearly from his appearance on 'Star Search', when I instantly was blown away by his voice. Like every great duet, when they begin to sing, they bring out the best in one another. Like two divas, they soar over the music and elevate it to something truly special. That is followed by "What Love Is", a ballad that indulges in a bit of R&B, and a whole lot of Soul. This could very well be my favorite vocal on this album, so balanced, and coming from his heart. Finally, we get to the last song on the album, "Let It Go". It starts off with a sweet Pop sound, but at one minute in, it hits me, there is something more to this song. This is a song that soars in a chorus, bring the listener into a place of forgiveness. The song crosses the borders between bombastic Pop and enlightened Gospel, ferried across by Levi's truly inspired vocals. So, are you not quite willing to take my word for it? Well, here is a sample of the album , featuring bits of "So Much Better", "Love Revolution", "Timeless (We Are)", "All Over Again", "Deeper Love", and "Any Way You Wanna". Please enjoy a little taste of 'Imagine Paradise'.
'Imagine Paradise' is a perfect album for the summer, weaving together a tapestry of Pop, Soul, R&B, and Dance to make it a great listen by the pool or on the beach, as well as perfect company in the car. It has a wonderful feel of Classic music, yet still maintains a fresh and bold sound I can't wait to hear again and again. You can purchase 'Imagine Paradise' from iTunes, Amazon, and CD Baby. To learn more about Levi, visit his official website. You can also 'follow' him on Twitter, and 'like' him on Facebook. Give him a big "hello", he'd be happy to hear from you. And you can visit 'Feast of Fun' online at the official website.

Sunday Morning with Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles
Clockwise: Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles; Jennifer Holiday; and Levi Kreis.
I think I found some great music that will surely inspire some this Sunday morning. And it all comes courtesy of the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles, who makes great music for all who care to listen. For over thirty years, the Chorus has been been a strong voice in the performing arts community, performing locally, touring nationally, and internationally. First I will bring up the clip of the group paying tribute to the late, great Marvin Gaye tribute, as they sing his amazing song about oppression and abuse, "What's Going On". The chorus starts the song with an intro of "War", the Edwin Starr hit written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong in 1969.
The chorus has never shied away from bringing in talented people to share their stage. I simply could not resist posting the performance of the gifted Jennifer Holiday sharing the stage with the chorus to sing "Family", the amazing song from the Broadway musical 'Dreamgirls'. With music by Henry Krieger and lyrics and book by Tom Eyen, Jennifer delivers the song as only she can, and offers her support to the community. Of course, she brings the audience with her on the journey, which ends with a standing ovation for this 2009 performance.
From one Tony Award-winning actor to another, out and proud performer Levi Kreis sings "His Eye Is On The Sparrow". The song, written in 1905 by lyricist Civilla D. Martin and composer Charles H. Gabriel, has become a classic spiritual, sung by some of the great names in Gospel music. As far as I can tell from this video, which was recorded about a year ago, you can certainly add Levi's name to the list of performers who sing the song to perfection. turn up the volume, and put the video to full screen, and enjoy this.
For more about the Gey Men's Chorus of Los Angeles, visit their official website. There you can support the chorus with a donation, or you can purchase their music at CD Baby. You can also find their music on iTunes and Amazon.

Sunday Morning with Darci Monet
This Sunday morning, I thought I might introduce a new singer to the blog, via two amazingly beautiful songs that are really a gift to all who listen. Darci Monet is a classically and commercially trained professional vocalist, vocal coach, independent recording artist and award-winning songwriter. I first came across her a few years ago when she collaborated with Levi Kreis, both as a songwriter and a singer. In fact, it was her work with Levi on his wonderful The Gospel According To Levi that let me know she was a very talented woman. Check out her duet with Kreis on the It Is Well With My Soul by Levi Kreis, a hymn by Horatio Spafford and Philip Bliss.
The two seem to enjoy the artistic relationship, as they did it again for Monet's album, Fusion. Go On features music by Darci and Levi, and lyrics by Monet. The song was a single off the 2009 album, when Darci was joined on the song by Levi and Debby Holiday. Beautiful and uplifting, the song speaks to the beauty and strength of life, when people who face an uphill climb decide to pull themselves together an valiantly Go On.
For more about Darci Monet, visit her official website. You can find Go On on Fusion, which is available on iTunes and Amazon.

Levi Kreis • Live at Joe's Pub
Album cover for Levi Kreis' Live @ Joe's Pub.
Are you wondering what you might want to get yourself or someone you love for Christmas this year? Near the top of your list should be the just released live album from Tony Award-winning singer/songwriter, Levi Kreis. The album has 14 tracks, with 10 great songs, and four totally charming dialogues Levi had with the audience. While I didn't catch this show in New York City, I did see the tour twice, first in the DC area, and again in Philadelphia. In fact, here is a little taste of the show at the World Cafe Live.
First, having taken a couple of days to listen to it, and it is beautifully recorded at Joe's Pub, which is a great club. The playlist was similar, but not the same as the shows I attended, which was not surprising. There were differences in the two I saw. On the recording, Levi starts out with a song to loosen up his limber fingers as he sits at the piano to play the joyful Hallelujah, I Love Her So, written by Ray Charles. It showcases Levi's strong southern blues background, and gets the audience on their feet. He follows it with another cover, although it is quite different. He sings I Can't Make You Love Me, a song written by Mike Reid & Allen Shamblin, originally performed by Bonnie Raitt. It sits in a beautiful spot in Levi's range, and envelops the listener with a warm embrace. Soon he sings two songs off his debut album, One Of The Ones. First, he explains the history behind making the album, and then sings the gorgeous Just This Good. It is a beautiful love song, bold and soulful, so full of joy and life. That is followed up with I Should Go, and Levi just happened to post a video of him singing the song at home, so here it is.
He finishes up with one more song from that 2005 debut, singing the charming Left Over. Soon he is taking up the 2006 release, The Gospel According To Levi. First up is The Reckoning, an interesting blend of soul, gospel, and Freud. Levi also sings We're Okay, a song he tells us speaks to the relationship with his mother, which has not always been easy. Soon he moved on to Where I Belong, the 2007 release that reached back to his much stronger southern soul roots. That is quite evident in the piano-driven Gonna Be Alright, which includes a little tip of the hat to Stevie Wonder and Songs In The Key Of Life. We were treated to Nothing At All, the stunning ballad featured in a video that topped the charts at both LOGO and MTV. Finally, he ends the show with a treat. Let It Go is a song he is working on for the new album due out in 2012. You can purchase Live @ Joe's Pub at iTunes here, and at Amazon here. Buy it for yourself - you'll be glad you did.

Garrin, Jason, Levi, Eric, Tom & Nathan Live!
Top: Garrin Benfield. @nd Row: Jason Antone, Eric Himan, Levi Kreis. 3rd Row: Nathan Leigh Jones. 4th Row: Tom Goss and Garrin Benfield.
As I was thinking about the blogiversary, I couldn't help but be reminded that I am a very lucky boy, having been able to catch some seriously good shows over the last 6 months. It all started last December, when I got to see Garrin Benfield for the first time! I have been a fan for several years, and have collected it all. Somehow, our schedules just never seemed to be in synch. So I was unbelievably excited when I had the chance to see him at the Grape Room in Manayunk, PA, with dear Mistress Maddie. It was a fantastic time!
When I saw Jason Antone, Levi Kreis and Eric Himan at The World Cafe Live! in Philadelphia, PA, in early January, I will admit it was not the first time I had the chance to enjoy them. I saw a show in Virginia in December, but my pictures were bad. I did have a great time, for I caught the show with Sweet Tom Goss and his husband, Mike. But in January, I was the show with family, having my sister, my niece, and cousins along to share the joy.
I was so very excited to catch Tom Goss at The Psalm Salon in Philadelphia, PA, for his CD Release Party for the new one, Turn It Around. With an album of new music, I knew it would be thrilling, but it surpassed my expectations. What a great time!
I went to another CD Release Party, this time for Australian singer/songwriter Nathan Leigh Jones at Joe's Pub in New York, NY. I was joined there by the delightful David Dust, who will always make for a fun time. But we both had a great time when David Raleigh sang an opening number, and Nathan played the entire album for the appreciative audience.
And just a few weeks ago, I was back in New York City to see Garrin Benfield at Sullivan Hall in New York, NY. Yes, after having missed his several years in a row, I was catching a second show, another CD Release Party. To be sure, I was loving the new album, The Wave Organ Song, but hearing it played live, well, that was just spectacular!
I look forward to catching more show, and bringing them back for you, my friends. Jake Walden is coming to town soon, Eric Himan is coming back in support of his latest album, and so many others are looking to play. And I am always more than willing to hear!

Tonys to iTunes: A Chat with Levi Kreis
I was lucky enough to be offered the opportunity to ask some questions of Tony Award-winning actor/singer Levi Kreis. Well, I was understandably excited, as I am a fan of his work, having purchased my first Levi CD after his appearance on the very first season of The Apprentice. I was intrigued by the handsome singer/songwriter, and searched for information about him. It paid off, and I was able to order One of the Ones, and I have been hooked since. My Kreis collection runeth over, including an autographed Playbill from Million Dollar Quartet, which I saw in previews. His performance of Jerry Lee Lewis was just remarkable, and not only brought him a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actor In A Musical, it also earned him the trophy. So I shall start out with my questions about his Broadway run before moving on to the music.
Which is the strongest aphrodisiac: touring with the new album or playing in a hit on Broadway? Touring my own music hands down. I have acted roles on stage though that were such a ride over the course of the night that it was exhilarating. I will definitely do theatre again, but the thing that makes my music main focus is that I love to be the muscle behind the product, from writing, arranging, marketing, promoting, to being the boss across the board. I think it's one of my fortes. I'm only good at being a "hired gun" for so long, then I start getting antsy.
After so many years with Million Dollar Quartet, how does it feel to be away from it? Wonderful. I am so grateful for the experience, but truthfully, musical theatre has never been a primary pursuit of mine, but rather something that seems to find me. And as you know, I never stopped turning music out and touring, so I've been working two really exhausting jobs for nearly three years. I prefer being a recording artist though. I am definitely more fulfilled expressing what is in my soul rather than molding the expression of someone else's. It's the writer in me.
What did playing on Broadway teach you about yourself? Did it change your thoughts on performing? Gosh, it taught me so much. It first taught me that every community has its own tendency towards self-importance, whether you identify as a recognizable member of your local gay community, theatre community, church community, sports team, whatever you are into. My challenge is to say, "how can I be within a community, yet not conform to the idiosyncrasies that define and drive that community." I know it's human nature to desire to belong to a social group of some kind, but it's always been a challenge for me to not get lost in the world of others and forget who Levi Kreis really is. I’ve become much better at it, but in an all-consuming world like Broadway, remembering "who Levi Kreis is" was a daily commitment. It also taught me how to give up control and be a team player. I’ve toured nearly 400 cities as my own boss, so to release control of everything from sound, music, arrangements, players, etc, was a real challenge at first. I had to realize that while I was there from the beginning with this show, ultimately, it was not my baby, and I was there to be of service. I don't think enough performers realize that when you are an actor, or a musical theatre performer, or a recording artist, you are in the service industry. There is absolutely no logic to an inflated ego. You are there to provide a service on demand, an experience for patrons who are laying their hard earned money on the table. I've always had that attitude about performing, but it really solidified it after being on Broadway. I could go on and on with this question.
With Million Dollar Quartet and Broadway covered, I think it is time to move on to the next topic: The Music. What tends to come first, the music or the lyric? The lyrics come first. I have developed a habit of listening attentively to the world around me, and most of the time my best ideas come from hearing the conversations of others. I start with the idea and fashion a chorus, usually lyrics and melody together as the chorus is so instrumental in the successful deliver of the song. Once the chorus is positioned, I write lyrics to a first verse, then melody to the rest of the song, followed by lyrics to complete the song. It's the same method most every time.
Are there any authors or playwrights who have inspired you? Country music inspires me in that most country songwriters are good at tapping into the common experiences we all share yet wording it in a very simple, yet unique way.
What is the better muse for your music: Love, or the lack thereof? GREAT question. I think any emotion that is paramount enough for me to express. Writing has always been like journaling for me, so the tone of an album is pretty telling as to where I was in life while creating it.
I have seen an evolution in the music through the first four albums. What can we expect 'new or different' in the album you are working on now? Another great question. I previously mentioned that so much of my music is a out-picturing of my own life experiences. In 2009, I hit a personal all-time low in my life, and it forced me to re-evaluate every aspect of my life. These last two years have made clear to me so much that I couldn't see before. In so many ways, my life has been lived seeking the approval of others, wanting to be good enough, and never feeling worthy. This was not lost on the musical endeavors of my past. With each album, there was some thing that I was seeking to be equal to, and chasing the current notion of "where I belonged" in the broader music scene. It led me to many genres and musical places that, while I would like to believe are solid, and still valid, still didn't invite me to the party. In the past, I've been more concerned about creating what would "get me farther" than what was simply the most fun for me to create. "Where I Belong", ironic title, is a great example of that. I was following the impressions that I belonged in a rootsy-pop Adult Contemporary market, so that's what I created. I was being authentic about what I expressed contextually, but from the musical perspective, it wasn't anything I would listen to. I would compare that album to Gavin Degraw or John Mayer, in that niche, but I don't own any of their albums. I don't really like ‘em. So, for me, this new album, first and foremost, stays true to what my supporters love the most: me, a piano, and some insightful lyrics. My debut album, "One of the Ones" is a perfect example of this, and is the fan favorite to date. The only thing I'm adding to this equation is finally, a style of music that I listen to on repeat, that I never get enough of, and allows me to enjoy my own music fully. Just to give you a little hint, I am framing my piano/vocal vibe with a slight "chill" framework, giving it a hint of electronic texture, but never too overbearing. We started the first song this week, and I'm beside myself. I'm finally having the fun I should have been having all along.
With the music just about covered, I have a few random thoughts I just want to know about! Is there any music that makes you a fanboi? Ricky Martin, mostly when I watch him perform on video. He has a charisma that few artists these days have. I forget that I'm an artist and I become entirely captivated by his craft.
Is there any place you'd like to travel to, for business or pleasure, where you haven't been? Australia. If I dream without limits, I envision this new album having the perfect appeal to an overseas market, particularly Australia, and I find myself getting paid to travel, see the world, and share my heart with others.
What guilty pleasure would my readers be surprised to hear about? Jersey Shore, but again, maybe that is not too surprising. I secretly want to be a Gorilla juice-head.
Currently, Levi is working on his next album, and you can be a part of it. He opened up a Kickstarter page to get the funding together, with some great perks, including a phone call from the man himself. You should check that out! And you can find his music on iTunes, Amazon.com, and other retail outlets. It is all well-worth listening to. I should know, I have it all in my collection! And, of course, you can check out his official website to find out more about the man and his music.

Waking Up With Levi Kreis
Wipe the sleep from your eyes, grab a cup and join Levi Kreis this morning to discuss future plans for his music, including a new album. As someone who went to two of the stops for the recent SideXSide Tour with Eric Himan, I can tell you I am a big fan, and really look forward to some new music. As Levi prepares to leave Million Dollar Quartet, where he won the Tony Award for his incredible performance as Jerry Lee Lewis, he is thinking of what is on the horizon for the talented singer/songwriter and actor. Levi Kreis, Eric Himan & Jason Antone Take On The World [Cafe] In Philly
Top: Jason Antone; middle: Levi Kreis; bottom: Eric Himan.
Sometimes, I think I am leading a blessed life. I was able to catch the SideXSide Tour in Vienna, Virginia, earlier. The tour features Tony-winner Levi Kreis, multi-award-winning Eric Himan, and Billboard recording artist Jason Antone. This was the first time I was able to catch Levi performing his own music, having previously seen him in Million Dollar Quartet on Broadway. I have been lucky enough to see Eric Himan every time he comes to the area, cause I just love his music. It was also my first time seeing Jason Antone, although I did download his album before going, just to get to know his music. You can catch my review here. On January 3rd, the tour stopped in Philadelphia, and I couldn't resist, I saw them again. And man, was I glad I did. I was splitting duty, taking pictures and videos, all with the hope I'd end up with something to share with my readers. Luckily, there is a bit of both! Here is a montage of the music for the evening.
Now, there are two reasons for my joy. First, I caught the show with my sister, niece, two cousins, and a cousin's nephew, making for a great family outing. Second, the chance to see amazing out performers is something no one should pass up. And you know, they were even better the second time around. All three seemed more at ease, and all were in top form.
Once again, the show opened with Jason Antone performing 3 songs, starting with a really nice acoustic version of Everybody Wants To Rule The World. The first thing you notice about Antone is the fact he is just incredibly good looking, and you could hear the buzz in the audience when he came out, both the men and the women. Antone has scored a couple of top singles on the Billboard Dance charts. For the next two songs, he performed his own music, which I didn't recognize from the album I have, and so I will give them the names I think they should have - I wrote to ask Jason, but haven't heard back yet. The second song, I'm On My Way, is a lovely ballad, with a nice uplifting message. His final number, What Too You So Long, picked up the tempo, and showcased a really nice falsetto. When playing acoustic, Antone shows a vulnerability that isn't as obvious in his dance-oriented recordings. He showed some really nice range in his quick set. Here is a full clip of the second song.
Jason also got to introduce the next performer, Levi Kreis. I remember catching Levi on an episode of The Apprentice, and instantly tried to find out more about him. That lead me to purchase his first album, One of the Ones. I've been hooked since, and purchasing all his material. He is the reason I went to see him play Jerry Lee Lewis in Million Dollar Quartet, and his performance was most certainly worthy of winning the Tony Award. So I was really excited about getting to see him do his own material once again.
Once again, Levi kicked the show off with a couple of cover songs, both of which suited his amazing voice so well. First he did Merle Haggard's My Favorite Memory, which showcased a deep and rich bottom end to his voice. He then went into Ray Charles' Hallelujah, I Love Her So, which was also covered by Jerry Lee Lewis. It is a great song. But then the evening really took off, as he went into his own music, and some great stories about his career to date. That is when the show took a more intimate turn, one that was not only welcome, but refreshing as well.
Levi seemed even more comfortable in Philly, and was asking the audience for song suggestions, which he later laughingly regretted. Levi also had the assistance from a member of the audience who found the lyrics to a song he hadn't played for a while. He played Gabriellle from Bygones, Just This Good and I Should Go from One of the Ones, The Reckoning, Standing Tall and We're Okay from The Gospel According To Levi, and Gonna Be Alright from his latest album, Where I Belong. He tied them all together with wonderful stories, both factual and personal, and all full of wit and charm. The show ended with Standing Tall, which had the audience clapping along. I am just amazed the way Levi can use his voice to perfection, all the while singing with a bluesy and soulful way that communicates to well. Here is another compilation, this time including some of his interaction with the audience.
As he had in Vienna, Eric Himan closed out the show with a strong set, and again, he seemed to top the last one as well. He was introduced by Levi, and the two had a warm embrace before Kreis left the stage. Like Kreis, Eric has a wealth of material to pull from, with several albums of strong songs written by the singer/songwriter. He kicked it off with a new song, one he hadn't ever performed live before. While he mentioned being nervous prior to starting, with a request to keep it just between us, you certainly couldn't tell once he began. In fact, he sang a total of 4 new songs on the evening, all making me hunger to get the new album this Spring. In fact, Himan played 14 songs in his set, 12 of his own, and 2 covers. One of my favorites of the night was the beautiful and touching No Urgency, from his I Go On... album, released in 2002.
But Himan is never one to keep it too safe, so he kept up a rather interesting mix of rock and up-tempo songs as well as ballads. He shared his time between the guitar and a more recent addition to his arsenal, the piano. While he mentioned he was recovering from a cold, you certainly couldn't hear it in his voice, which is always remarkable. Take, for instance, his cover of the Simply Red song Holding Back The Years. He had included it on his album Dark Horse, the only cover he has recorded. At the show, he played it in a mash up with Fleetwood Mac's Rhiannon. At first thought, it might seem a bit odd, but in performance, it was beautiful.
Himan also did an amazing cover of Jefferson Airplane's White Rabbit, which had the audience cheering. There were also favorites of his own oeuvre, like Little Boy Blue, Wish You Would, Clyde and White Horse. After singing his 4th new song of the night, Eric ended the show with a big "Happy New Year" to everyone.
After the show, Eric stuck around to sell some CDs, and touch base with the fans. As usual, I was eager to see him and tell him how, once again, he raised the bar with another fantastic show. I was a bit disappointed to hear Levi and Jason hadn't stuck around, instead caught a train back to New York. Since I didn't get the chance in Vienna, I wanted to tell them how much I appreciated their performances. Hopefully, they'll read this and figure it out. But I did get pictures of family with Eric, who is always a good sport about that. I didn't get one with me, cause, well, I am a little bored with seeing my own picture at the moment. And I have several shots with Eric, although I would bet next time, I won't be passing up the opportunity.
Top: Kathy, Eric & Mandy. Bottom: Margie, Kathy, Eric, Jeff & Eileen.
If I could, I don't think I would pass up the chance to see them on the final stop of the tour, when they are performing at Joe's Pub in New York City on February 28th. If I could, I would go again. But if you are in the area, I would be taking the opportunity to see some great artists and hear some amazing music. If you want to check it out, you can see about tickets here. Levi Kries & Eric HIman In Vienna, VA
Next Monday, I will be attending An Intimate Evening with Levi Kreis at the World Cafe in Philadelphia, and I can't wait. Levi's special guests for the evening will be the amazing Eric Himan, as well as the handsome Jason Antone. I was lucky enough to see the show at a previous stop, in Vienna, Virginia. I was lucky enough to be joined at the show by my friend, Tom Goss, and his husband, Michael Briggs. I picked Tom up at the airport, and Michael met us at Jammin' Java. With the help of Tom & the GPS, we were able to make it there in time to order some dinner, despite my own directionally-challenged self. I have to admit I went prepared, with a videocam and camera, and the video was a bust, and my pictures unspectacular at best.
We found our way to the seats, and settled in by the time Jason to be introduced and make his way to the piano. I was interested in this, as I know he tends to sing electronic dance-pop, but he performed a lovely, albeit quick acoustic set accompanying himself on the piano, including a beautiful cover of the Tears For Fears song, Everybody Wants To Rule The World.
I was a bit surprised, but next up was Levi Kreis. He made a beeline to the piano, and started playing right away, kicking in to a cover of Bonnie Raitt's I Can't Make You Love Me, an amazing song. Levi played a nice long set, with plenty of banter between songs as he took us through a nostalgic trip of his life, from life as a youngster to some of his musical highlights. It certainly was an intimate evening, with the audience learning much about Levi and what has brought him to this point in his career. This includes his thoughts on being on the first season of The Apprentice, not as a contestant but as part of a challenge. That brought about his first album, One Of The Ones, which included the beautiful ballad, With You.
In the trip down memory lane, he spoke of The Gospel According To Levi, Bygones, and the latest album, Where I Belong. There was plenty of great material from those album to give a full evening, and when pared down, it is quite the soulful tour de force. Levi has a voice that can soar to greater heights, and just as easily touch your soul with a whisper. Take, for instance, his performance of his last single, Nothing At All, which was #1 on MTV's LOGO network.
Toward the end of his set, he spoke of his great respect for Eric Himan not only as an artist, but also for his strength to tour so strongly, packing in crowds across the country. They toured together a couple of years ago, before Levi was involved with Million Dollar Quartet, and before the Tony win. So when Levi decided it was time to hit the road again, he wanted to tour with Eric once again. But Levi was taking an online class, and needed to be back in his hotel room, so after introducing Eric, he would be venturing to the merchandise area, where he would chat and autograph CDs.
I will admit this threw me a bit, as I love Eric, and could never be moved from my seat while he was playing, and figured this meant I would not get a chance to see Levi. But I would be getting to hear Eric sing live, which is always a highlight to my week. And, once again, Eric did not disappoint. He played some o fhis set on the guitar, and some on the piano, as his latest album, Out With The Old, features Eric reworking some of his previous material on the piano, which is fantastic! I love the piano version of Frozen In The Sun, a song from the Eric & the Adams debut. Included on the album is a new song, Gonna Make It Work, which you can see/hear in this clip.
Eric's set included his great original material as well as a few cover songs, and as is always the case, Eric was in great voice. He just has so much great material, I am betting I could see him weekly and never tire of his show. One of my favorites (and I have at least 20 songs I consider favorites!) is from the Resonate album, We Are The Same, in this clip sung with the amazing lesbian singer/songwriter, Andy Moore.
After the show, I did miss seeing Levi, but did manage to see Eric and get my picture taken not only with him, but with Tom as well. Being the ultimate in geeky fans, I did mention I still think Tom & Eric sing a duet on The Monkees' Last Train To Clarksville to be one of my all-time faves, so I needed to get a picture of them as well!
So, I am very much looking forward to seeing Jason, Eric and Levi in Philadelphia on Monday, January 3, 2011 at the World Cafe Live! If you are in the area for the show, I would say you have got to make it there. Click here for tickets. For more about Eric Himan, check out his website here. You can find Levi Kreis on the web here, and still see him 8 shows a week on Broadway in Million Dollar Quartet. You can find Jason's official website here. I'll be there with my sister Kathy, my niece Mandy, and cousins Margie & Eileen. And I hope to be having better luck with my pictures and videos, and will be sharing them with my readers.
The show has added another date, this time in New York City. They will be playing at Joe's Pub on February 28, and anyone in the area should definitely be checking that out here!
