The winners of the 2014 RightOut TV Music & Video Awards were announced recently, proving what great music is being made by LGBT artists. Well, that was obvious when I saw the list of nominees, coming from all around the world. RightOut TV was founded by Marlee Walchuk and Tully Callender, devoted to the promotion of LGBT artists and their music all across the globe. The submissions are from many genre, from Rock to Country to Electronica. Once again this year, I was proud to be asked to be a judge, hearing some more great music and discovering a few new artists. But enough with all that. It is time to showcase some very deserving artists. Today I am thrilled to feature Kevin Wood.

I am a bit saddened to say this is the last post of winners from the 2014 RightOut TV Music & Video Awards. At the same time, I am excited, for I feel as though I have met several new artists I will be listening to for years to come. I can speak from experience because the winner of the Fan Favorite is someone I discovered when I was a judge for the 2013 Awards. He scored the award for 'Best Video So Far' in 2013 for 'Make It In LA', so I wasn't the only judge he made a mark with. Kevin Wood so impressed me, I needed to go out and find more of his music. Apparently, he resonated with many others, earning the Fan Favorite award for 2014.

That leaves the only remaining category, one I kept until the end much like the Grammy Awards do. 'Song of the Year' is an award that sounds impressive, mostly because it is impressive. There was no shortage of fantastic submissions, leading to six outstanding nominees. The list included several winner featured earlier in this series, like former 'The Voice' contestant Sarah Golden and "The One I Love", Martine Locke with "All My Days", Corday with her uplifting "Riding a Rainbow", Jane of Arc with "Run Flying", and Megan Lane, who took an earlier award with "Someday We Will Leave This Town". But the award went to Kevin Wood, his second for this year, this for the song "One Time Around". The Long Beach, California-based singer/songwriter featured the song on his album 'Out Among the Wolves' earlier this year, and I loved it right away. Without further ado, this is the song named 'Song of the Year', "One Time Around" by Kevin Wood.

The first win I feature is 'Best Spiritual/Blues/Jazz/Instrumental Song', a category that spans several genres, all of which you can find in my music collection. There were several incredible submissions, and giving us five outstanding nominees. The list included Shawn Thomas with "Still Speaking", Anna Gutmanis and her single "Lately It's Cold", Norine Braun's "Lightning Strikes Twice", and Shawn Thomas' second nominated performance, "I'm Alive". I am pleased to announce the award went to Jamie Anderson and her ethereal, "Black and White". Anderson released the album 'Dare' in 2013, which included the winning song, which was named 'Best Spiritual/Blues/Jazz/Instrumental Song'. Please enjoy Jamie Anderson's "Black and White".

The second award was given for 'Best Performance in a Live Video'. This was tough competition, with many strong submissions. After the judging, the list was winnowed down to great nominations from FlyKINGi for "At the Roxbury", Avi Wisnia with his lovely "Sky Blue Sky - Live at The Michener", Andrew Suvalsky performing in "Live at Jazz @ Kitano in New York", and Rev. Yolanda with a great turn in "@The Duplex". I am pleased to report Jamie Anderson picked up her second win of the competition with "Her Problem Now", a great performance which also featured musician Mark Russell. The song manages to combine just the right mount of humor, bluesy grit, and honesty to make it a sure winner. And it also makes you think twice about ever dating a singer/songwriter, if you know what I mean. After all, who really wants a break up to earn your ex an award? While that might be true, it is my honor to introduce you to "Her Problem Now".

One of those is 'Most Moving Video', something so many of the LGBT artists I listen to have in common - music with heart. There were some amazing submissions, and giving us five outstanding nominees which included Kristy Apps and the Shotgun Shirleys with "Modest In its Glory", Andrew Suvalsky's "The Curtain", Ramona Montañez with "Naked", and Paul M's "Hands to Heaven". This year, the award went to Gallavin for the song, "La Chanson des Vieux Amants". The Swiss singer/songwriter released the album 'So Sad the Songs' in 2013, a wonderful collection of Jazz material. The album included "La Chanson des Vieux Amants", named 'Most Moving Video'. The song is fantastic, and has a great music video to make it even more touching. I must admit, I love both of the winners featured in this post, and both the artists and the songs have been represented here. So let me cut to the chase, and just say I am thrilled to announce the winner of the 'Best Video Pro' for 2014 is "Looking For Love", from Michael V. Doane. There is something provocative about a video that kicks off with the sound of a camera shooting, but that is quickly forgotten when the driving beat pulls you in, reverberating in your chest. When Doane's vocals begin, there is a wonderful strength and urgency. It had to be pretty good, for he beat out Matthew Connor's "How is July Already Over?", Matt Zarley's "Somebody 4 Everybody", "Naked" by Ramona Montañez, Marck Angel's "Positions", and Suzanne Nuttall with "Trophy Wife". The video, giving New York City hooker realness, never lets up until the end. This is Michael V. Doane with "Looking For Love" with Ivan Roudyk, Magnit and Slider.

As like several wards given out this year, the one for 'Best Video DIY' is going international as it goes to an artist living in England. DIY is short for 'do it yourself', and in this case, refers to videos which does not all a smaller budget from keeping the project from shining bright. It proves that when you have a great song and a fantastic artist, it is had to go wrong. This video won out over stiff competition from Tony Banks with "Old School Love", "You Don't Represent Me" by Nastaij and featuring Dawn Laird, Ember Swift's "Laowai / Foreigner", and Random Order with "Black Lipstick Kiss". That is certainly the case with K Anderson's music video for "14-Year-Old Me". I just love the song, and the music video, both of which cover me with charm from the start. The video captures the confessional and personal components of the song perfectly, so there is no question why it was named 'Best DIY Video'. This is K Anderson with "14-Year-Old Me".

I must say, there was a real richness to the next category, 'Best Soul/Hip-Hop/RAP/R&B Song'. There were some amazing submissions, and giving us five outstanding nominees. The list included Marck Angel's "Summertime", Be Steadwell's "Rainwater", Wordz the poet emcee with "U See That", I.K.P. with "Meraki", and Lester Greene's "Marital Bliss" featuring Michelle Tabot and Allen Parker. This year, the award went to D'Lance Jones, and I couldn't be happier. "Forever With You" was featured on the blog this past summer, when I first found it. The single was released in November 2013, and has been finding a way to the ears of people who love music. It seems to be a natural wedding song, or one that many a couple would be happy to call "our song". "Forever With You" was named 'Best Soul/Hip-Hop/RAP/R&B Song'. This is D'Lance Jones with "Forever With You".

Our next award is 'Best Rock Song', and once again, there were an impressive list of songs vying for the win. It was Canadian rocker Megan Lane who earned the award with her fantastic song, "Someday We Will Leave This Town". This was another category with strong competition, with music videos like Janis Mullan's "Nobody's Fool", Run Jenny with "Run Jenny", Felonious Parker's "Dominoes In Action", Szilenze with "Nothing Left to Say", and Patrick Boothe's "This is Not Venice". The song and video have such a strong energy, with a true drive in the beat, I can't help but start banging my head when watching. This is Megan Lane with the exciting music video for "Someday We Will Leave This Town".

I am pleased to bring to you, 'Best Lyric Video', a new category to this year's awards. The addition of the award goes to show you how forward-thinking Marlee and Tully are when it comes to changes in the music business. So many artists are making lyric videos to promote new singles. The development of these have come so far, which is easily seen if you check out the winner. This category attracted some amazing submissions, and there were five outstanding nominees. The list included Shawn Thomas with "I'm Alive", Saturn's "We", Norine Braun with "Boy", and Saturn's "I'm Coming Out". The award went to Matt Fishel, a British singer/songwriter I've had a musical crush on since I first found his music a few years ago. When planning this video, Matt asked fans to submit pictures of themselves as couples, which he used to make it, and it is really sweet. This is the winner for 'Best Lyric Video', Matt Fishel and "Finally".

The second award tonight is for 'Best Video So Far', I.K.P., which is short for the Infamous King of Positivity. The New York City-based rapper has been honing his craft for several years, including five years while he was serving the nation in the United States Marine Corps. He took his name to show his desire to remain positive in his lyrics, something he still believes in today. "Hunt Me Down" was named 'Best Video So Far', with deep competition from Jay Blahnik with "Boom Box", Thos Shipley's "M-O-N-E-Y", Jansz & June with "Rattlesnake Rose", and Drake Jensen's, "On My Way to Finding You". This is I.K.P. with "Hunt Me Down".

The first category I bring to you today is 'Best Pop Song'. This was certainly a fun grouping, with many amazing submissions, and five outstanding nominees. The list included Andrew Suvalsky's "Helplessly", Kevin Wood's "Edge of Greatness", Craymo's "Be Myself, and Matt Zarley's "Somebody 4 Everybody". This year, the award went to Alex Woburn and his fantastic song, "Sop Playing the Film". The London-based artist has a fun Pop sound with just the right amount of edge. In June of this year, Alex released the song as a single. So, without further ado, this is Alex Woburn with the 'Best Pop Song', "Stop Playing the Film".

Next up, we have yet another strong group of songs submitted for the 'Best Electronic/Dance Song', a big category for the awards. The song is a beautiful and honest song about love and life, and was named 'Best Electronic/Dance Song', with strong competition from Sponge Finger's "You're a Bitch", "American Thumpdalina" by Jay Blahnik, Michael V. Doane's "Looking for Love", and "Falling Away" by Kevin Wood. And I must say, Matt is no stranger to winning awards, having taken home several over the past few years. It should come as no surprise to my regular readers, as Matt Zarley and his music has been featured on this blog on several occasions, and for good reason. The Los Angeles-based Zarley makes infectious Pop that is both yummy and addictive. And speaking of yummy, have you seen pictures or videos of this hottie? I know, right?! The first category this year I bring to you is 'Best Song So Far', set up by Marlee and Tully for artists to promote the music released prior to the four-year-old awards. This attracts from amazing submissions, and there were five outstanding nominees. The list included Matt Zarley with "Here I Am", Kevin Wood and "The Moon Says Something", Caroline Murphy's "Hurricane", and Summer Osborne with "Letting Go". This year, the award went to Janet Whiteway and her fantastic song, "Pure Sunshine". The Toronto-based singer/songwriter has a rich history of performing, both as a solo act and in a band. In 2010, Janet released the album 'Pure Sunshine', and the title cut is now being honored as 'Best Song So Far'. This is the music video for "Pure Sunshine".

The song is a beautiful and honest song about love and life, and was named 'Best Folk/Roots/Country Song', with deep competition from Norine Braun's "I Found You", Andrea Nardello's "Home To Me", Run Jenny's "Get My Whiskey On", Toni Vere's "This Old Heart", and Sarah McCracken's "Horse Grapes". This is Sarah Golden with her achingly beautiful "The One I Love".

Whenever I listen to the music of Sugarbeach, I can't help but love the warmth and richness of the music and Marlee's gorgeous voice. Since they have a new song out, I rushed out to give it a listen, and quickly made my way to iTunes to add "You Believe in Love" to my music library! Ah, but perhaps I am ahead of myself. I will conclude this series featuring the winners of the 2013 RightOutTV Music & Video Awards with the two remaining categories. First up, I will bring you the Fan Favorite, Troy Jackson. It is hard to describe Jackson and his music. He is part Punk, part Hip-Hop, part Dance, and part Soul. and, depending on the song you are listening to, the recipe can vary. He is bold, a little brash, and as honest as the world will let him be. One way to get to know Troy would be to watch his music video for "The Batty Boys Revenge", found on Troy's 2009 release, 'Cd of Troy'.

I can honestly tell you as someone who filled out a ballot on this category, it was a tough one to be sure. I am not privy to the final totals, but I am sure they must have been close. And the winner was Kevin Wood and his stylish turn in "Make It In LA". There is a wonderful Country meets Pop feel to the song, and that is delightfully captured in the video. I loved it, and immediately went online to purchase the album it was on. I hadn't been familiar with his work before, but I most certainly am now.

Ferrick has been a great for in music for the last 20+ years, making strong music that is tough to put categorize. It is so textured, with such great depth, it just becomes powerful music to me. Out and proud since the beginning of her career, her musical message have often addressed the life and loves of lesbians. In the music video for "Home", Melissa looks amazing, and sounds even better. The song has a sultry feel, with an intoxicating rhythm that is teased by the imagery of the lyrics. From the first time I've seen it, this video has stayed with me. This is the winner for Best Folk/Country/Jazz or Adult Contemporary Video, Melissa Ferrick and the video for "Home".

While very different, you might say our next winner also defies labels. Saturn makes music that lives in the area of Pop, but crosses the boundaries between Electronica, Dance, and Hip-Hop, as you will be able to hear in "Top of the World". As you could see from my description, it is only appropriate the music video for the song would be named Best Electronic/Dance/Hip-Hop or R&B Video. The music video is sexy and flirty, and maybe even a little bit hypnotic. The video was directed by Charles Hereaux, and produced by Sky Life Media. This is "Top of the World" by Saturn.

Now I must admit I am a huge fan of Fishel's music, ever since I first saw the music video for "Football Song", which truly warmed my inner gay-boy heart. Earlier this year, Matt released a new album, featuring "When Boy Meets Boy", a sweet and charming story of young love that I just love. And the video is something very special, for it is directed and animated beautifully by Joe Phillips.

It manages to take a look at the life of a man serving the country in the armed forces, putting his life and love on hold while going overseas. Both the song and video are so well done, it is easy to see why Doug Strahm's "Leaving It Behind" was named Most Moving Video.

I first learned of Summer's music when she was nominated for a RightOutTV Music & Video Award in 2011, as well as 2012. I instantly loved her voice, so rich and sure, I had to check out more of her music. I now have a couple of her albums in my collection, including her latest, 'As I Am'. One of the tracks off the album, "Grace" is the source of Summer's 2013 nomination and win when she submitted a video of the singer/songwriter performing it live. The song shows a strength of craft, for it is a beautifully written song that is performed to perfection. This is Summer Osborne with her award-winning video for "Grace".

I have to be honest and say that when I saw the sinner of the category for Best Comedy Video, I had no idea who it was. I didn't judge any of the videos, and wasn't familiar with I'Wante, so I had to do a little bit of research. I'Wante is a comic rapper born in North Carolina who counts among his influences Chris Rock, Nicki Minaj, Weird Al Yankovic, Queen, and Lauryn Hill. He loves combining comedy and Hip-Hop, conveying his comedy through musical stories. And such is the case with his wining entry, "Niggah Please I Want Tiffany's & Co." I will mention that some might see his language as explicit or just wrong, but others will se it for the humor it is meant to be. So this is I'Wante with "Niggah Please I Want Tiffany's & Co.".

And if this music video is any indication, The Cliks are as good, if not better than ever! the "Savanna" music video was directed by The Young Astronauts, a great production team based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The song was written by Lucas Silveira & producer Hill Kourkoutis. This is the music video for "Savanna" by The Cliks.

Perpetual Detour was formed in a house in Halifax, Nova Scotia, four talented ladies getting together to make some truly interesting music. Well, not just music, for they have they fantastic stop-motion video they took on themselves! The music video for "What If It Was You" is a playful look at lesbian relationships, but I think it also takes a more universal swipe at the need for humans to couple. It truly makes me smile, and warms my heart. This is Perpetual Detour with their music video for "What If It Was You".

I continue my celebration of the winners with the award for Best Folk Song, "Unstoppable Force" by Kat Devlin. The single, a beautiful and classic Folk tale, is lovely and lilting, just a joy to listen to. Kat's voice has hints of the great Judy Collins, and flourishes of the beautiful Sarah McLachlan, yet her sound is still very much her own. I lope you love listening to "Unstoppable Force".

Following the studied consideration of the judging panel, the award for Best Pop Song was given to Kari K. & The Stonewall Riot for their wonderful song, "I’m Not the One". I'll be honest, I wasn't on the selection committee for this category, but if I were, I would be hard pressed to come up with a stronger winner! This song, which has a beautiful balance between Rock and Pop, is a bold yet nuanced recording, a standout in any group you could find it in. The band from Austin, Texas, is made up by Kari Kuwamura on vocals, Naomi Toledo on bass, and Selina Maldonadoon drums. New York-based singer/songwriter Michael V. Doane is the next featured artist, having been awarded Best Rock Song for "Keep Running". The song, a non-album single released in September, beautifully weds Soul and Rock to separate from the pack. Doane's vocals are strong and crisp, always hitting the notes with a laser precision. There is a wonderful density to the chorus, the sound enveloping the listener like a glove looking to keep you warm. I love it, and hope you enjoy the official music video for Michael V. The first artist to get bragging rights this year is Avi Wisnia, no stranger to winning awards, having won Best Video (DIY) in 2011 for his charming "Rabbit Hole" music video. This year, Avi won Best Song So Far for "Something New" a track off his debut album of the same name. The song gives a literal nod to great songs from the past that have inspired Wisnia, from artists as varied as The Beatles to Sade to Chicago. The RightOutTV Music and Video Awards is an offshoot of the free LGBTI artist promotional site at RightOutTV.com. Walchuk and Callender of the music duo Sugarbeach launched RightOutTV in November 2010 after realizing there were few places to release their own queer-messaged music videos. The women – married to each other – also saw a need for more unity in the global LGBTI music community. RightOutTV was created as a vehicle to serve both these purposes and to provide a fully developed promotional website and for artists who deserve more credit for being Out and proud with their music.
