World Cup Fever • Official Songs

Clockwise: FIFA World Cup 2014 logo; We Are One 2014 cover; Waka Waka 2010 cover; La Copa de la Vida 1998 cover; Boom 2002 cover; and The Time of Our Lives 2006 cover.

As part of my celebration of FIFA World Cup, the international soccer tournament being held in Brazil, I thought it might be nice to visit the official songs from the last few World Cups. I must admit from the top that, in reality, I was only aware of two of the last five songs prior to doing the research for this post. To start with, I will mention that World Cup is an international football competition, the kind known as soccer in the United States. For much of the world, it is a huge thing, and it seems as though the US is starting to catch up with that thought. This year, the games are being held in Brazil, the first time in South America since 1978. The official World Cup Song is "We Are One", performed by Pitbull, featuring Jennifer Lopez and Claudia Leitte. I must admit, even thought I have watched several of the games, I have yet to really register hearing this song. So, for what it is worth, this is Pitbull featuring Jennifer Lopez and Claudia Leitte with "We Are One", the 2014 World Cup Song.

Now if we go back four years to the previous World Cup, held in South Africa, I think of two things. The first is the horrible drone of the Vuvuzela, that noisemaker I wish to never hear again. The second is Shakira's very catchy tune, "Waka Waka (This Time For Africa)". I do remember this song, and hearing it during the competition. I must admit, I think Shakira is a charismatic performer, and to pair her up with the South Africa band Freshlyground was a clever move. This is Shakira and Freshlyground with "Waka Waka", the 2010 World Cup Song.

The 2006 competition was held in Germany, and I must admit, I didn't watch very much of it. Not because it was in Germany, but because I didn't really know much about soccer. The "official song" was "Zeit dass sich was dreht (Celebrate The Day)" performed by Herbert Grönemeyer featuring Amadou & Mariam, and I had never heard of the song, nor the performers. However, there was also an official anthem, and while I had never heard of that either, I was at least familiar with the performers. The song was "The Time of Our Lives", sung by classical singers Il Divo and R&B diva Toni Braxton. The song was written by Swedish songwriter Jörgen Elofsson and produced by British guru Steve Mac. This is the official music video for "The Time of Our Lives", sung by Il Divo and featuring Toni Braxton, the 2006 World Cup anthem.

In 2002, the FIFA World Cup was help in South Korea and Japan, giving it a distinctive Pacifica feel. Interestingly enough, the official song was "Boom", performed by American singer/songwriter Anastacia. She co-wrote the song with muscial powerhouse Glen Ballard, best known for his work with Alanis Morissette and Michael Jackson. This is another song that falls in the category of songs I don't recall at all, so I can't tell you I even heard it. This is the official music video for Anastacia's "Boom", the official song of the 2002 World Cup.

In 1998, the FIFA World Cup was held in France. While I am sure there were plenty of French artists dying to represent, that was not to be. It seems they chose a handsome young Puerto Rican man to do the honors, and he handled it quite well. They picked Ricky Martin, who sang a little ditty written by Luis Gómez Escolar, Desmond Child, and Draco Rosa. Now this one, I distinctly remember. I thought it was joyous and fun, and reintroduced me to Ricky Martin, my future husband. I saw him singing it on television, and he took my breath away, and left me intrigued. The next year, he would be releasing huge hits like "Livin' la Vida Loca" and "Shake Your Bon-Bon". His rousing performance at the the 41st Annual Grammy Awards made everyone sit up and take notice of the talented Latino. This is the official music video for Ricky Martin's "La Copa de la Vide (Cup of Life)", the 1998 world Cup Song.

Of these five songs, this is truly my favorite. It is also the only one that can be found in my iTunes. But I also enjoyed Shakira's song, too. All the songs are available on iTunes and Amazon. The FIFA World Cup competition is set to conclude on July 13th, when the final is scheduled to be played. At this point, the US team is still in contention to compete for the title, with a win and a tie in their first two impressive performances.

The Voice Season 6 Premieres Tonight

The Voice Season 6 photo TheVoiceSeason6_ring_zpsb66afb8e.jpg

Season 6 of NBC's 'The Voice' returns tonight with the first blind auditions of 2014. Through the first five seasons, the blind auditions have been the most exciting episodes of reality television music I have seen. We briefly get to know an artist getting ready to audition, and see them walk on stage, not knowing what to expect once the music begins to play. Well, that is not entirely true, for what we have learned is that there are no bad auditions, people seeking attention even if it is for performing badly. I remember the first season, and the excitement of watching and hearing Javier Colon sing "Time After Time" and Vicci Martinez sing "Rolling in the Deep", Nakia talk on Cee-Lo Green's "Forget You" and Beverly McClellan give us some Janis on "Piece of my Heart". This is a clip of Javier Colon, the winner of Season 1, singing Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time".

In Season 4, there were several auditions that impressed me. This was the season when Shakira and Usher joined Blake Shelton and Adam Levine as coaches, which I found to be a wonderful surprise. But, as I said, several of the auditions were memorable. I loved Judith Hill, and truly enjoyed Midas Whale. The Swon Brothers intrigued me, and Sasha Allen was just so impressive. But it was the audition of Michelle Chamuel that grabbed me right away. It was a harbinger of things to come, for she was impressive all season, finishing a close second. This is Michelle Chamuel auditioning with Katy Perry's "I Kissed A Girl".

Fast forward to Season 5 of 'The Voice', and a whole new series of auditions. This season, there was only one that really stopped me cold in my tracks, making me stop, look, and listen. When Jamaican singer Tessanne Chin took to the stage and began singing the opening lines of "Try", the song by the wonderful Pink, I was instantly engaged, and wanting more. Her voice is so rich, and so strong, I knew she would be special to watch as she sung her way to the title. This is Tessanne's audition, as she sings "Try" by Pink.

Tonight the journey begins once again. Season 6 begins on February 24, 2014, at 8PM on your local NBC station. To learn more about 'The Voice', visit the official website. You can also 'like' them on Facebook, and 'follow' them on Twitter.

The Voice Season 4 • The Finals

This evening, the Top 3 acts from Season 4 are looking to secure your vote to be named the winner of 'The Voice' on Tuesday night's results show. Last week, Team Adam and Team Shakira were eliminated, when Amber Carrington and Sasha Allen, respectively, were sent home. Both are very talented ladies, and may have paid the price for some questionable song choices, as has often been the case this strong and very entertaining season. From all reports, it sounds as though both Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green will be returning in the fall for Season 5, so Usher and Shakira might be done for at least the time being. I must say, I think they have done a good job, and was hoping to see what might happen if they were to return with a season of learning under their belt. My hat's off to all the judges for doing such a strong job, without becoming the focus of each and every episode.

The Final 3 are made up with members of Team Usher, Michelle Chamuel, and Team Blake, Danielle Bradbery and The Swon Brothers. Can Usher come through with a win in his rookie season as a judge? Can his Electro-Pop starlet command the votes to unseat the Country acts? Or will Blake take the title for the third consecutive season, and earn the first victory with a budding Country star? Can 16-year-old Danielle garner the votes to be the youngest winner so far, or will The Swon Brothers become the first group to take home the title. After all, Zach and Colton bucked the odds all season long, being the first duo or group to make it to the semifinal performances, and now the finals. Will the Country vote be split between the two strong acts, leaving room for Michelle to take the title in a season dominated by Country influences? Only time and Carson Daly can tell...

Carson Daly comes out to the screaming audience to remind us that this is the final chance to impress the voters, and all three acts want to win it, and get the recording contract with Universal. It seems like they will be singing three songs each, with one new song, the song considered their 'breakthrough moment, and a duet with their coach. Touching base with the coaches as the show begins, Blake has faith either of his acts could take the title, and Usher has designs to win it all with Michelle. The first performance tonight is from the judges, who take on "With A Little Help From My Friends", the iconic song from the Lennon-McCartney songbook. Here is how the Beatles got the job done "With A Little Help From My Friends".

After a break, it is time for The Swon Brothers to give their first of the night. We see a recap of their journey on The Voice, and how far they have come over the past few months. They are singing "I Can't Tell You Why" by The Eagles. The chorus for this song is sung in falsetto, with a real sweetness to it. Right away, we hear that Zach is in great voice, taking it to the song. They hit the falsetto in the chorus and are so on, it is scary. I am loving this performance. The Swon Brothers came to take the title back to Oklahoma. Usher was somewhat cool with his critique, but Shakira loved it, and had nothing but wonderful things to say. Adam thought it was incredible, just so right on. Blake is so proud of the boys, and how they have continued to evolve as artists, never resting on safe choices. After a break, Usher talks about how proud he is of Michelle, and to mark what he thinks is her breakthrough moment, Michelle will be singing Taylor Swift's "I Knew You Were Trouble".

She sound pretty damn good, but I find it is often so hard to catch lightning in a bottle a second time. She sang it beautifully, and delivered it with a real Pop/Rock feeling. Shakira tells her she is extraordinary as an artist, and that is what music needs right now. Adam just loves her energy, and what she does live. Blake agrees with Adam, and thinks she is a Rock Star. Usher calls her the winner, and is just so very proud of his pupil. After the break, Blake meets with Danielle Bradbery and her family, talking about her journey with them. Then they step on stage for a duet, and they sing "Timber, I'm Falling In Love", the great song from Patti Loveless. Blake is so sweet, taking the high harmonies, letting Danielle shine. After the break, Blake is back on the screen, this time to talk about the Swon Brothers. They are reviving the Loggins & Messina song "Danny's Song", which they first sang just last week. Their harmonies are so tight, it is hard to find fault. But once again, it is hard to spark the magic of the first performance. Solid, strong, and a delight. Usher thinks they were incredible, and made the competition disappear for a few moments. Adam agreed with Usher, and thought they did such a great song. Blake loved how they reinvented this classic, making it their own. Michelle Chamuel is up again, and will be singing "Why", the great song Annie Lennox. That is an incredible song, but Annie is a tough act to follow.

She sings the first part of the song into a mirror/video screen, with her back to the audience. That doesn't really work for me, I like it best when she has a direct connection to us. This is good, but not great. It is so hard to follow up the great Annie Lennox, who sings everything with such conviction and honesty. Michelle seemed to really connect with the final minute of the performance, which was so nice. Shakira loved it, and thought it proved her value as an artist, showing likability and capability. Blake loved the production, and thought it was wise to offer a softer performance, a different side of Michelle. Usher is just so proud of all she has done, and looks forward to hear what she will offer as an artist in the future. Blake meets with Mama & Papa Swon, before they do their duet with him. They will be singing "Celebrity", the big hit by Brad Paisley.

While the boys do their thing on the chorus, adding sweet, tight harmonies. However, the rest of the song proves to be a bit of a weak song for them. It just didn't feel like the type of song they would be singing on their own, lacking the musicality they have in abundance. After a break, it is time for Danielle to come out with her breakthrough moment. Blake believes she has had many such moments, but decided on "Maybe It Was Memphis" by Pam Tillis. Danielle performed it for the Top 16 round, which seems so long ago now. She did a lovely job, but I did feel she fell a bit flat at the end. I don't know what it was, but I thought she struggled a bit. Shakira donned a cowboy hat and tells Danielle she has such star power. Adam loves her, and announces he thinks she has won the whole competition, even thought it pains him that Blake would win again. After a break, Christina Milan reminds me why I think most of her onscreen interviews are a waste of time. Then Carson introduces Danielle, Michelle, and The Swon Brothers, who are there to sing "Home", a song from Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros.

I like the song, and it is fun. Then the rest of the Top 16 join them on stage. I think this is a really nice song, but the group arrangement comes off a little too 'Up With People', a bit dry and soulless. Which, by the way, I blame on the show, not the Top 3. After the break, it is time for Michelle Chamuel to duet with Usher. They will be singing "One", the great song by U2, covered exceptionally by Mary J. Blige.

Usher opens the song, with some of the best vocals I've heard from him this season. When Michelle joins him, they sound great together. By the end, Michelle is out-singing Usher, catching fire just as her coach was running out of gas. As we go to the final break, Carson reminds us that we still have a performance from Danielle Bradbery. Once again, we are reminded of her journey, and hear Blake using his superlatives again, and we get it. She is going to win. She will sing "Born To Fly" by Sara Evans.

It is really the first uptempo song we've heard from her. The song is a cute Country song, but somewhat generic to me. It lacked a bit of zip that might have allowed it to take off, but I am not sure Danielle is prepared to zip yet. I find her to be pitch perfect, but a bit vacuous, most likely because she is still so young. I wish I could get more excited about her, but it just isn't happening for me. Usher tells her she is special, and did well. Adam doesn't know what to say, since he already declared her the winner. Blake reminds us he thinks she is the most important artist to come through 'The Voice', and how important she will be to Country music. Yep, I get it, folks. I understand who you think will be announced as the winner tomorrow night. But honestly, I thought The Swon Brothers were the strongest on all three songs, followed by Michelle. My reaction all season long has been the same for Danielle, a bit tepid. But it is time for the votes to be cast, for America to pick their favorite. Speaking of votes, to learn how you can place your vote, visit the official website. In brief, you can vote via a toll-free phone number, online at NBC.com, with the special NBC App, or Facebook. Unlike some shows, The Voice limits the amount of votes people can place per method. You can vote 10 times per phone, or 10 times via Facebook, or 10 times via NBC App between now and 10AM Tuesday morning. The phone number is (877)553-37XX, filling in the 'XX' with the artist number. Those numbers would be The Swon Brothers 01, Michelle Chamuel 02, and Danielle Bradbery 03. Don't forget, your iTunes purchase also counts as a vote, if you are so inclined. There is a link to all the songs on the iTunes front page.

The Voice Season 4 • Top 5 Perform

Alas, my dears, I was not around last week, as Bryce needed some assistance to celebrate his 5th birthday. That means the last time I recapped, it was the Top 8 performing. During the results show, we learned that Sarah Simmons and Judith Hill were sent home. I was truly surprised by Judith's dismissal, for I felt she showed true talent during her performances. Last week, the Top 6 performed two songs each, one picked by the coach and the other by the artist, and when all was said and done, it was Holly Tucker who left the show. That means we are down to the final five artists, including the only remaining men, The Swon Brothers, who are also the only group to make it to the semifinals, so each week they are making Voice history. So far, all four coaches are still in the game, with Shakira, Usher, and Adam Levine with one artist, and Blake with two still going for the win. There are three Country artists, and two Pop singers remaining, and it is just a matter of weeks until we learn which the public will prefer this year. Who is your favorite?

The Voice Season 4 photo thevoice4_2_zps9b6b5c64.jpg

Carson Daly tells us that for the first time ever, the top 5 were sent home to visit their friends and families. And there will only be three performing in the finale next week, so tomorrow night, we will see two acts going home. And even in the best of circumstances, one judge will not be joining the others in the finals. And if Blake has his way, maybe even two. Then Carson introduces Usher, who sings "Twisted". Here is the official single version, featuring Pharrell.

You can find the song on iTunes and Amazon. Carson introduces are first contestants of the night, The Swon Brothers. They are dedicating their performance to friends back in Oklahoma, and they will sing Bob Seger's wonderful "Turn The Page". They are sounding great, and Zach in great voice. It was intense and strong, just what the boys needed. Usher thought they were fantastic, and set the bar high for tonight. Adam loved it, and is so glad they dedicated the song to the musicians back home. Blake is quite proud, and feels they continue to get better and grow as artists. After what feels like a long break, Christina Milian talks to Danielle Bradbery & Amber Carrington. She has a message for Danielle from Tim McGraw, wishing her good luck when she sings his song tonight! Not to be outdone, Adam arranged for another message, when Katy Perry wishes Amber the best of luck singing her personal favorite, "Firework". Both girls are thrilled and excited. Carson introduces the next artist we see, Sasha Allen, who will be singing "I Will Always Love You", which she dedicates to her son and daughter. Whitney Houston has always been an inspiration for her, and this song has extra meaning.

She does a lovely and restrained version of the song, a much more intimate and personal feeling. She certainly sings it her own way, not imitating anyone. It is gorgeous, really, and so heart-warming. Adam is impressed by her, knowing the iconic nature of the song. And he loves that she not only sang it her own way, she also sounded amazing doing it. Usher thought it was amazing, and thinks that voice will keep her in the competition. Shakira is so very proud of her, for Sasha gave a wonderful performance. Shakira's mother has been telling her Sasha should sing Whitney, and this proves she was right. After a break, we visit Amherst, Massachusetts, on her home visit. She sees friends and family and her old job. She has an interview on the radio, and sings 'God Bless America' at Fenway Park! For her first song of the night, she sings "Clarity" by Zedd, the German electronic Dance musician/producer. She sounds great, although it wasn't her strongest so far. Adam just loves her, but feels that is he says that every week - cause it's true. Blake wishes she would stumble, but she never does. Usher is so proud, for she is so consistently good. He is so glad to be her coach. Danielle comes out next to sing her first of the night. But first, we see her trip home to Houston, Texas. She has a large family greeting, and heads over to her high school. There she learns she will be singing the National Anthem for the Houston Astros game. Tonight, she will be singing "Please Remember Me", written by the Country songwriters Rodney Crowell and Will Jennings. Here is the most recent version, sung by Tim McGraw.

She does a great job, showing nice vocal control. I felt it lacked a bit of emotional content. I know she is just 16-years-old, but I would just like to feel more on a song like this. Usher calls her performance "amazeballs", telling her how impressed he is by her poise and grace. Adam agrees, and talks about the performance being so very technically proficient. Blake loves her, and how she never takes a wrong step with her notes. He loves every note she sings. After the break, it is time for Amber, the last to sing her first of the night. She will be singing "Firework" by Katy Perry. She dedicates the song to her best friends back in Texas. The beginning is a bit low, showing a weakness in her range. But once the song picks up, she is bold and strong, and even outstanding at times. It is nice to hear her put a bit of Country in her Pop diva. Blake is impressed, and calls the power of her voice 'Phenomenal'. But he wants her to sing more Country! Shakira knows that is a tough song, but thinks she did very well. Adam admits it is a tough one, but thinks it is the best he has heard the song sound. And he loves that she can sing Pop, and Country, and embraces the fact she doesn't fit in just one place, she defines her own. After a break, we see The Swon Brothers returning home to Oklahoma. Colton and his Grandmother were adorable. They visit the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame, where they used to work. They are surprised to learn they have been named the Rising Star of 2013, complete with a welcome message by Vince Gill! They have a sold out show in their hometown, truly energizing them for the show. They sing "Danny's Song" by Kenny Loggins, a true classic from his Loggins & Messina days.

They have such a natural sense of harmony, this is really beautiful. The harmonics of the song seem tailor-made for them. This was simple, beautiful, and breath-taking. I am not sure it will save them, but it certainly showed their strength. Usher thought it was another great performance from the boys, and loves how they made Country music so accessible for him. Adam says this is one of his favorite songs, remembering how he learned to sing to the original Loggins & Messina single. He just loves what the boys do, even if this is one of the few songs he already knew! Blake points out he learned from the Ann Murray version, and Adam is lost again. Blake is so proud of them, and thinks this was a great week for them. Next up, we return home to New York City for Sasha Allen, and how she surprises her daughter after school. She also has a radio interview, and then goes on to sing at the Village Underground, where the artists show up to support one of their own. She then takes on her second diva of the night, for she is singing "Bad Girls" by the late, great Donna Summer. She sounds amazing on this, updating the sound with a new and vital vocal. The audience goes wild, the best response from them so far. Adam loved it, and thinks she was great. Usher, who gave her a standing ovation, loved it, and thought it offered a wonderful tribute to Summer. Shakira is so proud, and mentions that "Bad Girls" was the first record she purchased. After an excessively long preview of the new film starring Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx, it is time for Danielle Bradbery, who will be singing "Who I Am", a song recorded by American country music artist Jessica Andrews.

This is a great song for her, allowing for her youth and ups the cute factor. While singing, she goes out to her family, and singes to her parents. There is a sweetness factor that can't be missed. Usher loved it, and thought she was incredible. Shakira loved it, and thinks she will be able to say "I knew her when..." Blake thinks she is a superstar, and predicts big things for her. After yet another break, it is time for Amber Carrington, who will be singing "Sad", written by her coach and James Valentine, and performed by their band, Maroon 5. But first, we see her visiting home in Texas, and her sisters are just adorable. She sounded relaxed for the radio interview, and excited to visit the boutique where she used to work. She visits with her late mother's parents, a touching moment. Then she heads to the Riverfront to give a concert, where there was no standing room to be had! Back to the show, she sings this really beautiful song, and it sits wonderfully in her register. Her emotional connection is wonderful, and it brought a tear to my eye. Blake loved it, and thinks she hasn't gotten the recognition for her emotional performances, always there. Usher congratulated her for making it this far, and thought her performance was fantastic. Adam is so proud, for he wrote the song with Valentine, recorded it, and he just saw her make it sound so much better than he ever could. He loves her, and couldn't be any happier. After a break, we come back to hear Michelle Chamuel sings a song written by Tony Award-winner Cyndi Lauper and Rob Hyman, of the great band, The Hooters. She dedicates her performance of "Time After Time" to her coach, Usher. Here is Cyndi's iconic version.

Michelle, who had a big moment with Cyndi's "True Colors" in the Top 16 performances, hopes to repeat history tonight. I hate to say it, but this one didn't work as well for me. I think she is incredible, and I love her, but this one got a bit lost in the process for me. She was always on key, never straying. But something was lacking. Shakira loved it and her, and says she is "in permanent crescendo". Adam says he loves her once again. Usher is moved she dedicated the song to him, and thinks she is the winner. Carson breaks in, and quickly signs off, as they are running tight on time. Before the show started, I figured The Swon Brothers would be most likely going home, but now I am not so sure. They had a great night, and I think they proved they have something to give to this competition. But no one really made a mistake, although there were a few stumbles. It wasn't the strongest night for Danielle, nor for Amber. We shall see if it comes down to Country artists, or if Sasha and Michelle will be fighting for your votes to stay for the finals. Speaking of votes, to learn how you can place your vote, visit the official website. In brief, you can vote via a toll-free phone number, online at NBC.com, with the special NBC App, or Facebook. Unlike some shows, The Voice limits the amount of votes people can place per method. The Voice Season 4 • The Top 8 Perform

Well, it is Memorial Day Weekend and yet I am sitting at my computer, waiting for The Voice to come on. The Top 8 will be taking to the stage, looking to sing their way to the Top 6. Shakira and Usher are hoping the lone remaining contestant makes it through this week, and that Adam Levine and Blake Shelton might finally be sending an artist home. I might still be a bit cranky after they sent home 'the pretty' last week, leaving very little distraction from a few mediocre acts that should be going home. Between doing some tree and hedge trimming today, and losing the pretty one, I fear I might be a bit cranky this evening, so I hope the artists are ready to deliver!

The Voice Season 4 photo thevoice4_2_zps9b6b5c64.jpg

Carson comes out to remind us to be grateful to those who have fought for our right to enjoy reality singing competitions. He introduced the judges, and reminded us who was sent home last week, and tried to remind us about the stakes for the teams, with the possible elimination of Team Shakira or Team Usher. Then he introduced 'rarely sober' Blake Shelton coming out to sing his latest single, "Boys 'Round Here". It is as close to a Country Rap song as I have heard, like, ever.

It is a fun song, but not one I will be running to purchase any time soon. However, if you are in a frame of mind that you have to have it, you can find it on his most recent release, 'Based On A True Story...'. You can find it on iTunes or Amazon. After a break, Carson talks to Adam about what his team needs to do to keep together. He also asked Shakira about what it will take to keep Amanda coming back, and Shakira hopes America will hear her great voice. Usher hopes America realizes there is no one else like Michelle Chamuel in the competition, and will keep her on the show. Blake hopes his team makes it through again, for he is just so proud of each and every one of them. Team Adam puts up with Judith Hill, who will be singing #thatPower, by Will.I.Am and featuring Justin Bieber. She takes a very Electro-Pop song and brings it to a deep Soul place, more James Brown than Justin Bieber. I think she was great, really showing off her amazing vocals and ability to really imprint a performance with her own style. Blake loved it, and thought it was yet another performance where he could find nothing to complain about. Usher thought she started the show off well, and is a real talent. Shakira loved what she did, and loved that she is taking chances with performances. Adam was so very proud of his star, and thinks of her more as an artist than a competitor on a singing show. After a break, Holly Tucker meets with Blake to work on her performance of the song "Done" by The Band Perry. Blake asks her to stay away from the pretty side of her voice, to get down with the angry side of the song. Here is The Band Perry with "Done".

I find this performance lacking, as Holly's vocals seldom show me any depth at all. She always reminds me of the girl taking the microphone at the County Fair. I kept wanting her to do something that wasn't predictable, that wasn't safe. It didn't happen. Carson called on Usher for his thoughts, tossing some shade by calling out Urkel (with his Michelle Chamuel glasses), and Usher served back, reading Daly as 'Jimmy Neutron', and damned if he isn't right. That could be my favorite part of the show so far. Usher loved Holly's boots, and thought she was incredible. Shakira loved the performance, and enjoyed the sass and attitude. Adam loved it. Blake tells her he is so proud, as it is the first time she has really owned the song. Really, Blake? You seem to love her every week, but this was the first time? I'll move on. Judith, Michelle, Sarah and Sasha team up to take on Rihanna's "Diamonds". All the ladies look great, and I have to say I was most impressed by Michelle Chamuel, who was so completely on the for the entire song. I thought Judith and Sasha were also wonderful, but Sarah kind of was overwhelmed by it all, and faded out a bit. During the commercial break, I see the advertisement for 'America's Got Talent', and I can't imagine a judging panel I would be less inclined to tune in to hear. Back on the show, Blake is talking to The Swon Brothers, who will be singing "Seven Bridges Song" by The Eagles. First they discuss what is happening back in their home state of Oklahoma, and all 3 are moved by what they have heard, and keep everyone in their prayers. Blake loves what they do in rehearsal, but reminds them it needs to be tight. They are the last men left, and the only duo or group to make it this far in the history of the show. Here are The Eagles performing "Seven Bridges Road".

They keep the harmonies tight and strong, and I loved it. There was a real strength and heart behind it. Usher loved it, and thought it was so strong. Shakira thought it was a little bit Country, and a little Rock & Roll, and loved it. Adam loved it, but noticed there were a few moments that were a bit scary. Blake was very proud of them, and thought this performance showed how talented and unique they are. Sasha Allen talks about the pressure of being the last representative for Team Shakira, and she will be singing "Without You" by David Guetta and featuring Usher. She comes out and sounds a bit vulnerable, but soon is owning the song, her voice coming out big and bold. She is killing the song, and brings it to a surprising soft and beautiful ending. Adam just tells her how bittersweet it is to hear her, and that she is with the right coach. Blake loved it, and thought it should keep her around for another week. Usher is so glad she did her thing with it, and thought she was great. Shakira loves her, and thinks she is just so talented, and made the risk of singing another coach's song pay off. After the break, it is time for Sarah Simmons to meet with Adam, as they talk about her singing "Somebody That I Used To Know" by Gotye and featuring Kimbra. Adam feels the song has been out of culture for long enough it will be fresh with her. I am not sure about that. He feels this is the artsy kind of music she should be making. Before too much longer, here is Gotye and Kimbra singing "Somebody That I Used To Know".

I loved her audition, but ever since then, I just feel she is all about affectation, not real communication. She doesn't sing a bad note, although there is that unfortunate scream near the end. I felt like the performance was scattered, and frantic, almost manic. Blake, Usher, and Shakira are all supportive and polite, but not gushing. Adam thought she was wonderful, and one of the first people to get the song right. I roll my eyes, and opt to just move on. The four Country acts will be working together, as The Swon Brothers, Holly Tucker, Danielle Bradbery and Amber Carrington get together to sing a great song by Sugarland. They tackle "Something More", and I have to say it is a little bit less successful than the earlier group song. While all four are Country artists, they all seem to have a different take on the song, and it never comes together. No one did badly, but I didn't feel anyone shined, either. All I can think of saying is "Next!" And that would be Michelle Chamuel, who is meeting with Coach Usher to talk about her take on "Grenade" by Bruno Mars. Usher wants to pare the production back, and show off her voice and artistry. Here is Bruno Mars singing "Grenade".

Michelle's performance is powerful, and soaked with real emotion. She connects with the song on a real visceral level, and shared that with me. This was the best performance of the night, and she just controlled that moment. Shakira thought it was spectacular, and Adam was excited to watch it, and called it one of the best of the night. Blake was impressed such a big voice comes out of such a little human being. And he thought it was her best so far. Usher is so proud of her, and what a special artist she is. I have to agree with him. After a break, we learn that Danielle Bradbery will sing "Grandpa" by The Judds, one of Blake's all-time favorite songs. In rehearsal, she struggles a bit with the lyrics. We also learn she never really met either of her grandfathers, and she is singing this for them. I am not loving this performance, for I don't feel a real connection from her. She sounds great - she has a wonderful instrument - but it was very paint-by-numbers. Usher loved her boots, and loved her effortless performance. Shakira also loved it, and thought she has real star quality. Adam just thinks she is a Country star in the making, a true talent. Blake was so proud, and thinks she did the song beyond justice. That leaves us with just one more for tonight, as Amber Carrington will rehearse with Coach Adam as she prepares to sing "Skyfall" by Adele. That is a huge song by a singer not used to doing Pop. But first, here is Adele singing "Skyfall".

She has a cool new look, working some great hair. She delivered some seriously wonderful vocals, with great attitude and boldness. Blake loved her, but pointed out you can't hide the Country. Usher thought she was incredible. Shakira was sold on her with the high notes, which were amazing. Adam is just so proud, and thinks she is the first person on this show to do Adele justice. Carson tells us it is time to vote, so it is time for me to review the night. With only six acts making it through to next week, this means there are two acts leaving tomorrow night. I truly hope that Judith, Sasha, Michelle, Amber and the Swon Brothers are safe, for they all had strong vocals this week. Danielle was good, but I felt a bit off this week. The weakest of the evening for me was Sarah and Holly, neither truly connecting with me for their moment in the spotlight. Of course, it all hinges on who has the most votes, and which two have the least. Those numbers would be Judith Hill 01, Holly Tucker 02, The Swon Brothers 03, Sasha Allen 04, Sarah Simmons 05, Michelle Chamuel 06, Danielle Bradbery 07, and Amber Carrington 08. Don't forget, your iTunes purchase also counts as a vote, if you are so inclined. There is a link to all the songs on the iTunes front page.

The Voice Season Four • Top 10 Perform

As we prepare to hear The Voice Season 4 Top 10 take to the stage, I also look back at last week, when the voters sent VEDO and Garrett Gardner home. They were certainly among the weakest of the performance show, but I think Garrett has been handcuffed by song selection two weeks in a row, something that is tough to beat when you are going against artists who have picked, either themselves or by the coaches, songs that were perfect for them. I really thought Garrett stood a chance of making it further, but alas, it didn't happen. Like last week, the bottom two vote totals will be eliminated, no matter the team. As both Usher and Shakira lost an artist, both are in danger of being bounced out of the competition, so they should give special attention to the songs and performances this week. Speaking of which, it is time for the show!

The Voice Season 4 Judges photo the_voice_judges_zpsd9d01b49.jpg
Left to right: Adam Levine, Usher, Blake Shelton and Shakira.

Carson Daly greets us once again, and reminds us the two lowest vote totals will be sent packing, but first, this week begins with a performance by the band featuring one of the judges. Yes, it is Maroon Five and Adam Levine, on stage to perform the latest single, "Love Somebody".

Adam was in great voice, and the song sounded like a fun Pop song. And the boys were all dressed in white, looking amazing. You can find the single on iTunes and Amazon. We are told the coaches brought some help, with their advisor's returning. Only Shakira's gets the help of former (and future) judge Cee Lo Green. The first singer will be from Team Blake, who is worried about the people of Oklahoma. Blake picked "How Great Thou Art", a Christian hymn written in the 19th Century. Holly Tucker is up first, and feels Gospel is a big part of her, and so glad she doesn't want to hide it. She has a strong voice, but I feel very little depth to it. I heard no richness, just volume. Usher was somewhat vague, but nice. Shakira loved it, and Adam thought it showed off her pristine vocals. Blake loved it, and thought it was her most important performance to date. He thought it was also a wonderful, and perfect timing with the tornadoes in Oklahoma. Next up, Adam chose "The Way You Make Me Feel" by Michael Jackson for Judith Hill. She is unsure, for she worries about what might be said about her relationship with the King of Pop. Adam tells her to worry less, and just do the song to pay respect to someone who was important to her.

The opening bars are given a smooth Jazz feel, and her vocals are flawless. Then the tempo picks up, and she delivers a wonderful Pop performance. Her vocals is so strong, and her delivery so tight, it is wonderful to watch week to week. Blake can't find a single fault with her performance, and Usher thought it just reminded him about The King of Pop, and how much he missed him. Adam was just so proud of her, and what she did on that stage. Team Blake is back, with The Swon Brothers singing "How Country Feels" by Randy Houser. In rehearsal, Blake and Cheryl Crow offered some suggestions, but really love they way the boys have grown. This is definitely a Country song, but while I love the Swon Brothers, I thought this performance lacked a bit of energy, a bit of zip. Shakira loved it, and thinks they always just make her feel better. Adam thinks it was great fun, and he is a bigger fan after each song. Blake is so proud, and feels they keep picking up momentum. As we go away to commercial, Carson reminds up they are the only duo or group to make it this far in the four seasons of The Voice, a true credit to their talent. Adam is back with adviser Hillary Scott, as he has picked Kelly Clarkson's "Breakaway" for Amber Carrigton. Adam sees her has an artists who could sing either Country or Pop, and this is a great song for her. Hillary has faith in her, sure she is a talent bound for the finals. But first, here is Kelly Clarkson singing "Breakaway".

The opening bars are a little light, a bit low for her, but the song quickly builds to the strength of her voice. Once it does, she oars with the chorus, and delivers a great performance. With the wind blowing, she was so comfortable, it was great. Blake loved it, and loves her. Usher was blown away, and loved her. Shakira thought it was a great choice, really in Amber's wheelhouse. Adam thinks that is great, for Kelly has one of the best voices in the business, showing how strong a competitor Amber is this season. The first of Shakira's two remaining contestants, Sasha Allen will sing "Next To Me" by Emeli Sandé. Shakira brings in Cee Lo Green to assist her. Cee Lo loves Sasha, and thinks this is a great song for her. Sasha comes out looking fantastic, and sounding even better. That was a great performance. I thought Sasha just killed it, It was my favorite of the night so far. Adam loved it, and was so glad she was singing something contemporary. Blake agreed, and thought it was a great job, and the vocals were amazing, as they always are. Usher thought she was amazing, and showed everything he needed to see. Shakira was giddy, and so proud and thrilled by the outstanding job done. Usher and Pharrell are back to give their time to Josiah Hawley, who will be singing "Clocks" by Coldplay.

This seems like it should be a good choice for him, but he struggles a bit on the high end of the chorus, and that is such a shame, for he is sounding fantastic on the rest. Couldn't they come up with a fix for that? As he was performing, you could see he knew it was problematic. I thought it was wonderful, but fell short. Shakira thought it was a tough to take on Coldplay, and while he did well, it was not great. Adam agreed, noting there were moments when he had command of the song, and times he was so not comfortable. The inconsistency was a problem for him, but he really likes Josiah. Blake thought it was musically good, but failed to tell the story, which is a problem for him. Usher can't agree with everything said, and instead reaffirms how much faith he has in the handsome man. After the break, it was time for Blake to offer some coaching for Danielle Bradbery, who will be singing "Heads Carolina, Tails California" by JoDee Messina, with Sheryl Crow. Crow loves the talented young lady, but wants the young lady to connect with the audience, and share her journey with them. She comes out and sings bold and strong, but I actually thought this was her weakest thus far. There were a few moments that were problematic with breath control, but I thought the biggest thing was the lack of connection Sheryl was looking for. Usher thought it was great, and she made Country cool again. Adam thought she was a superstar, and was still a shining example of the teenager. Blake could not be more proud of Danielle, and thinks she will once again rule iTunes sales tonight. After another long commercial break, The Voice returns for Team Shakira. Kris Thomas will be singing "Adorn" by Miguel, only Cee Lo wants to change it up a little bit, and give Kris some swag. But first, here is Miguel with "Adorn.

While his voice sounds sweet on the song, he does not feel comfortable with the upbeat tempo. He also has more problems with breath control, and his falsetto is a bit timid because of it. However, at the end of the song, when he starts to freestyle, he does come back to life a bit. Adam thought it was great vocally, but he would like to see Kris relax a bit more, have some fun. Usher thought it was a strong performance, but that it was not a great song choice. Shakira stood up to say he showed everything you needed with that song, and while he might have a few nerves, he has the vocals and talent to make it in the music business. Other judges tried to interrupt her, but she had none of it, defending her artist. Soon it was time for Adam and Hillary to check in with Sarah Simmons, who will be singing "Mamma Knows Best" by Jessie J. This is a shocking pick for me, as it is going against what we have heard from her so far. The song is bold and bluesy, not light and ethereal.

Sarah really connects to the song, and the lyrics, so she really wants to lay it down. Hillary just wants her to remember control, and to not let the song get ahead of her. She starts well, but after a few bars of the song, she is being drowned out by the band. I don't know if it is the mix or what, but I am straining to hear her, and losing half the song. I fear the song won that battle, not Sarah. Blake thought she radiated sexy, and showed a new side of her. Usher thought it was an incredible performance. Adam loved it, and thought she was so awesome. Adam thought it was the performance of the night, so it must have been an issue with my television... Finally, the last performer of the night is Michelle Chamuel. Usher and Pharrell are there to help her in rehearsal with Pink's "Just Give Me A Reason". It seems like it was a perfect song for her, combining the edgy Rock with the Pop impulses that make Michelle so amazing. Pharrell really believes in her, as does Coach Usher. She starts off the performance much better, and it grows from there. She is on fire tonight, and this was her night. This is easily the best of the night for me, and there were a couple of really good performances. I loved it. Adam just loved it, and said he is such a fan of her. Blake just loves her style. Usher thought it was the best of the night, and tells her so. They are running late, so they are in a hurry to get done. Carson reminds Oklahoma the thoughts and prayers of all on the show are with them, and the results are coming tomorrow. For me, there are a couple who should be worried. Holly, Kris, Sarah, and Josiah were not at their best. I hope Josiah can make it through, but you can never tell when it is all in the hands of voters. Speaking of votes, to learn how you can place your vote, visit the official website. In brief, you can vote via a toll-free phone number, online at NBC.com, with the special NBC App, or Facebook. Unlike some shows, The Voice limits the amount of votes people can place per method. Those numbers would be Holly Tucker 01, Judith Hill 02, The Swon Brothers 03, Amber Carrington 04, Sasha Allen 05, Josiah Hawley 06, Danielle Bradbery 07, Kris Thomas 08, Sarah Simmons 09, and Michelle Chamuel 10. The Voice Season 4 • Top 12

As we hit night 3 of the Live Playoffs, the Top 12 will be taking to the stage, looking to make it past this week, garnering enough votes to be a part of the Top 10 next week. With all 12 performing this evening, the votes will be done by 10AM tomorrow morning, and the bottom two vote totals will be sent home, no matter what team they are from. Yes, that means one coach could potentially go from 3 artists to 1, should their team not deliver when it counts. As the show opens, host Carson Daly explains the heat was steaming up the West Coast, and the theater lost the air conditioning, but they have hopes it will get turned on shortly. He thanks the studio audience for sticking it out despite the heat, and the judges are prepared to be in it for the long haul on this hot night of performances.

The Voice Season 4 Judges photo the_voice_judges_zpsd9d01b49.jpgLeft to right: Adam Levine, Usher, Blake Shelton and Shakira.

The first up for the night will be VEDO, who will sing "Rock With You" by Michael Jackson. VEDO met with his coach, Usher, and Usher's choreographer, all to add more finish to the show. In the end, the work paid off, for he sounded quite good, and he was moving well during the song. It was a great mix of song and dance, although I would think it is tough to take on Michael Jackson, who was just so damn talented. Shakira loved it, and always finds him entertaining and leaving his heart on the stage. Blake loved it, and thought it all worked so well. Usher was so very proud, for it showed he not only did the work, it also puts him in prime position to move on. Team Blake is up next, and Holly Tucker will sing "Broken Wing" by Martina McBride. Blake advises her to sing hard, for the message of the song is so important. Here is Martina McBride singing "Broken Wing".

Holly opens up the song singing strong, and never looks back. It was like she started with the pedal to the floor, and never lifted. Honestly, I didn't feel a strong connection with the message, but with the volume. The early run wasn't sounding that great, falling a little limp. I was a bit disappointed. Usher loved it, and hopes she understands she is a real talent. Shakira was thrilled, and thought Holly sounded better than ever. Adam also enjoyed the performance, and thought it was her best of the season to date. Blake was so proud of his student, and thinks Nashville is sitting up and taking notice of her talent. Shakira is up next, and she sends Garrett Gardner to the stage, singing "I Want It That Way" by the Backstreet Boys. She thinks it will be cool getting a rock version of a 90s boyband hit. This is a very strange song choice, and I just fear Garrett is just too young and inexperienced to really put a strong stamp on the song. Adam was not thrilled with it, and just wanted to be honest with him. Blake understood the song choice, but wasn't sure he delivered. Usher just wanted him to understand the constructive criticism was only to help make him a better artist, and they all were pulling for him. Shakira wants Garrett to ignore them all, she is so very proud of what he did, and thinks his fans, especially the girls, will take care of him. After the commercial break, we learn the air condition is back on, and it is time for Sarah Simmons to sing "The Story" by Brandi Carlile. Adam wants her to get out of her comfort zone, and deliver a bold performance. But first, let's check out Brandi singing "The Story".

I really love this song, and think Brandi Carlile is a gifted songwriter. I liked this performance, although there was an odd flow Sarah's rendition of the song. It felt like she was trying so very hard to deliver vocal range, and kinda forgot the emotional side of the song, which is really deep. I mean, I did appreciate she had more growl in her voice than I ever thought was there, but it just felt misplaced for me. Blake just loved it, and he loves that song. Shakira thought it was a great song choice, despite not knowing the song. Adam is thrilled with her, as she can deliver the lilting light vocals, as well as the gritty, bluesy kind. He just loves her, and thinks she is one of the best singers that has appeared on the show. After the break, it is time for Blake to coach The Swon Brothers, who will be doing a tribute to the late George Jones, and sing an acoustic version of "Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes". I am really surprised, for they delivered a strong performance, simply and beautifully sung. Their voices blend so damned well together, I thought it was their best performance to date. I loved it. Usher thought it was beautiful, and they did a great job. Adam thought it was a lovely tribute to the man, and they made him forget it was a competition, and allowed him to just enjoy the show. Blake was so very happy, pleased The Swon Brothers honored the late George Jones as well as Country music with that song and performance. He felt it was their break-out moment. Soon it is time for Shakria to being out her next artist. Sasha Allen will be singing "Alone" by Heart. During the rehearsals, Shakira wants her to work on the opening lines, to make it more personal. But before she sings, let's hear Heart singing "Alone".

I have to say, I think the advice was really good, and she delivered an awesome version of the song, one that didn't really sound like Heart. Her voice was so spot on, and so filled with emotion, I was really touched by the performance. Adam thought she was incredible, and proved once again he was wrong for letting her go. Usher thought it was amazing, and she did everything right. Shakira loved it, and thinks Sasha has one of the best voices she has ever heard. After a break, it is time for Josiah Hawley to meet with Usher. Josiah will sing "The Man That Can't Be Moved" by The Script. He wants to deliver an acoustic performance. He comes out in jeans and a t-shirt, and his acoustic guitar. Here is The Script singing their song.

As Josiah begins the song, he sounds so tuned in, not only to the pitch, but also the lyrics. I have to say, Josiah has impressed me once again. At first I thought he was just a pretty boy who could sing, but he is proving to be far more than that. This was a great performance. Adam thought it was his best so far, and he delivered that in his sweet spot. Blake was also impressed, and thought it was his strongest so far. Usher was thrilled for him, and thought he had this great idea, and pulled it off perfectly. Next up is another strong vocalist from Team Blake, Danielle Bradbery. She will be taking on "Wasted" by Carrie Underwood. Those are tough shoes to fill, for Carrie is an amazing singer. She delivers a strong and beautiful performance. However, I thought it was just a bit karaoke. There were no bad notes, and not a single moment of nerves to be seen. Shakira is just so impressed by her, a 16-year-old that never shows any signs of nerves on the big stage. Adam thought she was amazing, and feels she is the frontrunner at the moment, and his singers have to step up to give her competition. Blake just loves his student, but really loves that she is just a normal girl, not changed a bit by her time on TV. Soon it is time for Judith Hill to meet with coach Adam Levine, who tells us she will be flying solo, playing the piano with no other accompaniment. She will be singing Carole King's "You've Got A Friend".

She starts off with a soft and simple arrangement, and allows it to build with an amazing feel. This was beautiful, for it stayed away from the karaoke versions of this song we have all heard far too often. There is such power in her voice, and yet she still managed to connect to the lyrics, and deliver the emotion. This is just one more excellent vocal on the night, making it very hard for people to vote. Usher thought it was an amazing display of artistry, and he loved it. Blake just thought it was a perfect performance, every aspect on the money. Adam thought it proved just how special her talent is, and is so proud to have her on his team. After the break, it is time for Michelle Chamuel, who will be singing "Call Your Girlfriend" by Robyn. Michelle loves that, for she wants to be an eclectic electronic artist, blending genres much like Robyn. While I loved the intent of the song, I wasn't sure that was a great follow-up to her brilliant last performance. I thought her voice was a little light on the song, like the song needed to be dropped a bit to honor her vocal strength. Either that, or she lacked the confidence to really deliver. I really wanted this to be better than it was. Shakira gave Michelle kudos for being able to sing and dance, which is not as easy as it seems. Adam tells her how much he loves her, and the interesting choices she makes. Usher tells her he is so very proud of her, and how he is so pleased he is part of her journey on 'The Voice'. After a break, we hear Kris Thomas was getting ready to enlist in the Navy, but came to audition instead. He will be singing "I'll Be There" by the Jackson 5, hoping to let him show his vocal range. Here are Michael and his brothers with the song.

I have to say, I was a bit disappointed here, too. On the chorus, he seemed like he was straining to hit the notes, and he added just a few too many runs, which fell short for me. The song started so high, his move from chest voice to falsetto was not as smooth as it has been previously. Once again, I wish they had adjusted the key down, to really let his voice be the best it could be. Adam gave him credit for being able to hit those notes in a live performance. Usher thought there were a few places that seemed a bit mixed up, like he couldn't decide if he was singing Michael's version, or the cover by Mariah Carey. Nice catch, Usher. Shakira is so pleased with her singer, and thinks he sounded great, and proved how much he wants to be in this competition. And as we come near the end of the show, it is time for the final performance of the night. Adam's Country artist, Amber Carrington, who will be taking on Martina McBride's "I'm Gonna Love You Through It". It is a message that touches her deeply, and she dedicates it to her mother, who was taken by cancer. She comes out a little timid, but quickly allows the song to carry the day. She is a talented young lady, and gave a really wonderful performance. I was impressed. Blake loved it, and thought Amber not only did Martina proud, but Nashville and Country music as well. Usher is just plain impressed by the depth and breath of her voice. Shakira thought it was wonderful. Adam is so proud of her, for the song was so close to home, and she kept it together and delivered a fantastic performance. So we are at the end of the night, and all that is left is the voting. To learn how you can place your vote, visit the official website. Those numbers would be VEDO 01, Holly Tucker 02, Garrett Gardner 03, Sasha Allen 04, The Swon Brothers 05, Sarah Simmons 06, Josiah Hawley 07, Danielle Bradbery 08, Judith Hill 09, Michelle Chamuel 10, Kris Thomas 11, and Amber Carrington 12.

The Voice Season 4 • Reive & Recap Live Playoffs 2

Last night, we had several excellent performances to kick off the Live Playoffs for Season 4 of 'The Voice'. Team Adam and Team Usher showed some talent, and a little bit of nerves. Can Team Blake and Team Shakira top those performances, having the chance to watch from the audience. Or will the pressure to match those add an extra layer of nerves to them all. Team Blake, made up of Justin Rivers, Holly Tucker, Danielle Bradbery, and The Swon Brothers, and Team Shakira, with Garrett Gardner, Kris Thomas, Karina Iglesias, and Sasha Allen, will be singing for your votes tonight. We won't know about the results until tomorrow night, but first, they must sing. And so they will. And not just the contestants, for we also find out there will be a special performance by Shakira and Blake, which should be exciting.

The Voice Season 4 Judges photo the_voice_judges_zpsd9d01b49.jpg
Left to right: Adam Levine, Usher, Blake Shelton and Shakira.

The competition starts with a clip of Blake taking his team to a karaoke bar, trying to let them relax and show the best side of them for the audience. They all took a turn at the microphone, with a time to sing, and to laugh together. This will prove useful as Team Blake sings "Boondocks" by Little Big Town. The harmonies on the chorus are wonderful, bright and strong. The solos were not as strong, just a bit rough. On the whole, it was fine, just unexceptional, and I will admit I expected more from them. And after a commercial break, it is time to Shakira to send out her first artist, Garrett Gardner. In his rehearsal, we learn Garrett will be singing the iconic "Imagine" by John Lennon. Shakira is looking for Garrett to take the song to a new place, to sound more rock anthem than ballad. First, let's hear John Lennon sing this classic.

This is a tall order for the 17-year-old, to sing a song as big as this, and to start the night to boot! He did a nice job, and changed it up just a little bit. He showed some nice color in his voice, and delivered some nice moments. It would be hard to not realize he was in the shadow of an icon, not in the sun like he should have been. But having said that, this is just the beginning of the night, and there are more performances to come. The first performer from Team Blake to have their moment in the spotlight is Holly Tucker. In her rehearsal, we learn she will be singing "How Do I Live", the Diane Warren song made famous by LeAnn Rimes. The original had such a distinctive sound and feel, for LeAnn has an incredible voice. But we also learn Holly has issues with her confidence, not with her singing, but the way she looks. Blake reminds her she is beautiful, and deserves to be there. As the song begins, she seems bold and in control of the song. She attacked the vocals, and it paid off for the most part. However, she lost a bit of control toward the end, and the final run was just messy to me. Her falsetto went awry, and you could tell she knew it. However, it didn't seem like Usher, Shakira nor Adam realized it, for they all praised her vocals, and told her she looked beautiful. Blake loved it, and thought she put her self in the position as one of the singers to beat this season. Next up, Kris Thomas takes his turn for Team Shakira, the man with the falsetto. He will be singing "When I Was Your Man", by Bruno Mars. Shakira is quite hands-on during the rehearsal, including singing with him! But first, here is Bruno singing his song.

Kris started off a bit nervous, feeling like he was standing back just a bit. But he warmed up into the song, but never fully. In the middle of the song, he picked it up and did a nice job, and never went off key, despite the nerves. Adam points out the nervousness, and would like to see him relax more. Blake, on the other hand, loved the nerves, for this is important and they should be nervous. Usher just thinks the man is a talent that should be recognized. Shakira was so very proud of him, and thinks he is not only a talented man, he is also a wonderful person, and she is proud to work with him. Next up, Blake works with The Swon Brothers, helping them prepare "Fishing In The Dark" by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. While Blake loves them, he worries about their vocals, for they can get a little sloppy. Right away, they are on their game tonight, the vocals tight and precises. They have an old-time Country feel that cannot be missed. Zack and Colton delivered. Usher loved them, and thought they were great. Shakira always enjoys them, and can't wait to hear them next. Adam also enjoyed them, and joked about how 'Blake' they were! Blake just loved they sounded fantastic, and taking care of all the notes from rehearsal. He is thrilled they stayed so tight. After a break, it is time for Blake and Shakira to put their money where voices are, and they sing "Need You Now" by Lady Antebellum.

I am really surprised, for Shakira sounded great on the song, really delivering the goods. Blake stayed in the background at first, but really came to life on his solo vocals, delivered so very strong and clear. This was a charming performance, one I liked even better than the Usher/Adam duet last night. Karina Iglesias is up next for Team Shakira, singing "Let's Stay Together" by the Reverend Al Green. Shakira loves the soulfulness in Karina's voice, and thinks this will make it stand out. She starts off the performance well, already showing more control and strength in her voice than her last time out. There is a nice soulful sound in her voice, and she delivers a strong performance. Adam loved her, and thought she was fantastic. Blake loved it, thought it was so intense. Shakira is so proud, feeling she left it all on the stage with that song. After the break, we come back to see Blake rehearsing with Justin Rivers, preparing to sing "Meet In The Middle" by Diamond Rio. Blake warns him to relax his airways, and give more life to the vowels. Before he sings, this is Diamond Rio singing "Meet In The Middle".

Right away, I am not sure this was a great song choice for him, as his voice sounds a little shallow, a bit soft, and is swallowed a bit by the band. But midway through, he relaxes just a bit and his performance comes to life. His voice adds some richness, with some depth to it as well. He was most definitely better by the end of that song. Usher loved it, and felt it was a real Country moment for Justin. Shakira loved it as well, and finds him to be a reliable performer. Adam loved when he really owned the performance later in the song, and it really came alive. Blake is just so pleased with his pupil, proud of how well he handled the whole performance. Next, we have the final group performance of the night as Team Shakira will take on the classic "We Are The Champions" by Queen. She brought her choreographer, Nadine "Hi-Hat" Ruffin. Shakira wants something unforgettable to happen. The song starts off well, each performer taking a solo. But the chorus together was a bit soft, and only Sasha Allen stood out for me. I suspect this was not the moment Shakira was looking for, as this was mostly forgettable. After the break, it is time for the last of Team Blake to find her way to the stage. But first, Danielle Bradbery goes to rehearsal to get some thoughts from Blake as she takes on "Maybe It Was Memphis" by Pam Tillis. Blake loved the song when it was a hit 20 years ago, and loves that Danielle is singing it now. But first, let's listen to Pam Tillis singing "Maybe It Was Memphis".

This is an excellent choice for Danielle, and her voice sounds beautiful and crystal clear throughout. She delivered the emotional texture to the song, and I saw nary a false move. Usher loved it, and Shakira was left speechless. Adam was loving it, and angry that she was not on his team. Blake could not be happier with her performance, and thinks she might very well be the most important artist on the show, for he expects much of her after the show. I can't be sure, but she could be the 'Carrie Underwood' for this show, a real star on the Country music scene. This leaves us with our last performer of the evening, as Sasha Allen goes to rehearse with Shakira. She will be taking on "Oh! Darling" by Paul McCartney, and performed by The Beatles. Shakira loves her, and just wants her to deliver the grit throughout the song. But first, here are The Beatles singing "Oh! Darling".

I have to admit, I love Sasha's voice, but the song started off just a little soft for me. But that doesn't last long. Her voice picked up such great depth and heft, and there is an amazing grit to her voice, such a desperation in her soul, I was crazy about where this song went. The end of the song was amazing, so raw and so real. I just loved this performance, and hope it pays off for her in votes. Speaking of votes, we will get the results from the performances tonight as well as Monday night, with an hour results show on Wednesday at 8PM on NBC. Left to right: Adam Levine, Usher, Blake Shelton and Shakira.

Tonight, along with the solo efforts, we will also be getting a group performance from each team, and we lead off with Team Usher taking on a favorite of mine. Josiah Hawley, Michelle Chamuel, VEDO, and Cáthia will be singing Sam Sparro's brilliant "Black And Gold". But before we hear them, we also see Usher taking his team to an unusual spot, a Kickboxing Gym. He wants to help them build up their endurance, wanting them to always give their best. But soon it is time for them to work as a team as they sing "Black And Gold".

The first solo performer of the night goes to Amber Carrington, the young Country singer with the bold voice. She will be singing Rihanna's "Stay", and she puts a twang in this Pop song. Adam loves her voice, and gives just a few tips during the rehearsal. While she hasn't been a favorite of mine thus far, she is doing a wonderful job on this song, giving her strongest vocals I have heard from her so far. There is a fullness in her voice that is so wonderful to hear, and still manages to get ethereal with her top end. Blake, Usher and Shakira all loved it, and gave her high praise. After the break, handsome Josiah Hawley will be performing. We discover he will be singing "Starlight" by Muse, for Usher feels that is the type of music he is destined to play. While rehearsing, Usher reminds him the song will be a exercise in breath-control. But it is now time to hear "Starlight".

He starts nicely, and I have to say, he has continually surprised me with his ability to up his game round after round. His voice is strong and supported, and even gives moments of haunted. No, he isn't Matthew Bellamy, but very few can be. He manages to both do the song justice, as well as make it his own, with a few different twists on it. Blake loved it, and thought the world just lost a male model. Of course, he will fill in for him there... Shakira loved it, and felt it was a strong, sincere performance. Adam is impressed by how far he has come since his audition. Usher is as proud as he could be. Next up, Adam will be sending Sarah Simmons to the stage, singing "Angel" by Sarah McLachlan. It seems like a softball, a song that is just up her alley. She struggled a bit in rehearsal, getting too emotional as she is dedicating it to friend who had passed away last year. On stage, she had a good performance, although there were some odd moments in there. There are times there is a rough edge to a note here and there, and at times just missing notes, sliding from on to flat, or sharp. I was really thinking she would nail this. Blake, Usher and Shakira all loved it, feeling the emotional weight she brought to the table. Adam just loved it, and has nothing but respect for her. After a break, it is time for Usher to send out his next artist. That is Cáthia, who will be tackling a Whitney Houston classic. Usher thinks she can handle "I Have Nothing" from 'The Bodyguard' soundtrack. In rehearsal, Usher is working on musicality with her, trying to get her to feel the heartbeat of the song, and go with it. Here is the late Ms. Houston singing "I Have Nothing".

Cáthia looks lovely as she comes out on stage, and begins with some solid vocals. In the chorus, she drifts off key a bit, taking some notes flat instead of resting on their sweet spot. She continued to try her best, giving it all her heart. Shakira is the first to talk to her, and while she loves Cáthia, she is unsure that was the right song for her, as Whitney's songs are hallowed ground. Blake loved it, thought she did well. Usher thought his charge did well, but did not achieve all his goals for her performance tonight. He still believes in her, and thinks she can still go all the way, even after this weak performance. After a break, we hear we will be getting a true treat, as Adam and Usher will be joining forces in a very special performance. In fact, they take on Stevie Wonder's Superstition". I am shocked, their voices actually work together. Of course, neither has a big or bold voice, and both show a great deal of style. Adam is happy to step back and play his guitar, and they deliver a sexy segment of the show. When we come back, it is time for Caroline Glaser to join coach Adam in the rehearsal hall. She will be singing "The A Team" by Ed Sheran. Adam chose it for it was a bit darker than she had sung thus far, and it might work for her. But first, this is Ed Sheran singing "The A Team".

She has that quirky, indie-girl sound. She was good, and solid as things go, but she did kinda garble the lyrics, and swallow some of the notes. Blake and Usher loved her performance, and think America will vote for her. Adam is very proud, and felt she has a different sound and style that he loves. After the break, it is VEDO who will be competing for votes after he sings "Against All Odds" by Phil Collins. In the rehearsal, he struggles with a few of the high notes, and Usher gives him tip for proper vocal support. I love that he is taking the time to do that. During the actual performance, VEDO sounds pretty darned good. He helps the song sound current, not trapped in the 1980s. It was not the best of the night, but it was good. Shakira is surprisingly standoffish, noncommittal with her thoughts. However, Adam loved him, and thought he did well. Usher was very pleased and proud of how well he did. After Christina Milian chats with Team Usher, we learn that the ladies of Team Adam will be singing "Shake It Out" by Florence and the Machine. Team Adam is, of course, Amber Carrington, Caroline Glaser, Judith Hill, and Sarah Simmons.

The ladies sound great, but I think it is Amber and Judith who stand out from the crowd. I am actually still surprised how much Sarah Simmons is disappearing vocally tonight. I didn't see that coming. After another commercial, the final contestant from Team Usher readies herself to perform. Michelle Chamuel shows up to rehearsal ready to talk on "True Colors" by Cyndi Lauper. He thinks it will be a great opportunity for her to become vulnerable with the audience. She starts if off simply, and her voice is just gorgeous. She is certainly making it her own, very different from any version I've heard before. This is easily my favorite performance of the night. Shakira loved it, and felt she was so authentic, so honest. Adam loved it, too, and thought it was her break-out moment. Blake also loved it, and told his acts to pay attention. Usher is thrilled, and thought she was incredible. After a break, it is time for the final performance of the night, as Adam sends out Judith Hill. In rehearsal we learn she will be singing "Feeling Good", written by English singer-songwriters Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse for the 1964 musical 'Roar of the Greasepaint - The Smell of the Crowd'. It was made famous by Nina Simone, and quickly became a standard.

She does a great job with the song, making it feel current and her vocals are tight and on the mark. This is giving Michelle a run for the money as best of the night. I can't find a fault in that vocal, not one. Blake and Usher loved it, and didn't find the words to show much. Adam is so thrilled with her, so proud she took her moment. If I am not mistaken, we will be learning the results from the performances tonight as well as Tuesday night, with an hour results show on Wednesday. To learn how you can place your vote, visit the official website. In brief, you can vote via a toll-free phone number, online at NBC.com, with the special NBC App, or Facebook.
