Valentine 2015 • Chadwick Johnson • Unchained Melody

 photo Chadwich_Johnson01_585_zps9ad08320.jpg

As part of my celebration of Valentine's Day, I am offering up some songs from some of my favorite artists. Luckily enough, I am able to pair up one of the greatest love songs ever with one of my favorite vocalists. "Unchained Melody" was written by Alex North and Hy Zaret in 1955. North had written the music for a prison movie, 'Unchained', which is how the song got the name. It was made famous by the recording made by the Righteous Brothers, a world-wide hit in 1965. Fast-forward 47 years, and Chadwick Johnson recorded the song as part of his 2012 release, 'Soul Rising'. I had been eagerly awaiting the release of the album since first finding Chadwick's music after falling in love with his recording of "Intoxicated". His voice is like magic to me, and I could listen to it all the time. Check it out for yourself with Chadwick Johnson singing "Unchained Melody".

I love Chadwick's voice, and can't stop listening to the album. To learn more about Chadwick Johnson, visit his official website. You can also follow him on Twitter, and "like" him on Facebook. You can purchase your own copy of 'Soul Rising' from iTunes or Amazon.

I love "Pure Imagination", a song from the film 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory', written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley for the movie, and sung by the amazing Gene Wilder. This morning I offer you a version sung by Chadwick Johnson, with Spadoni on piano. I am a big fan of Chadwick and that magnificent voice, and I could listen to him sing just about anything. But when he has a wonderful song like this one, I am in heaven. This is Chadwick Johnson singing "Pure Imagination".

When I hear Chadwick sing, he captures my heart every time. For more about Chadwick Johnson, visit his official website. You can also follow him on Twitter, and "like" him on Facebook. You can purchase his most recent release, 'Soul Rising', from iTunes and Amazon.

Chadwick Johnson • Unchained Melody

Chadwick Johnson

I am not sure I could think of a better way to greet your Saturday than to have Chadwick Johnson singing, well, just about anything. But when he is taking on one of the great R&B songs, one of the most recorded in history, that just makes it damn-near perfect! In 1955, a song with music by Alex North and lyrics by Hy Zaret was written for a movie. That movie was a prison flick named 'Unchained.' And that is how it got it's title, "Unchained Melody." And while it was recorded and sung by many people, it was a single released in 1965 by the Righteous Brothers that soared to the top of the charts, and still lives on in the memory and hearts of many. So, just 47 years later, Chadwick recorded it for his release, 'Soul Rising,' and put this video up of a fantastic live performance. Enjoy.

You can find 'Soul Rising' on iTunes and Amazon. For more about Chadwick Johnson, visit his official website. You can also follow him on Twitter, and "like" him on Facebook. To purchase the physical CD, complete with dedication and more pictures, go to Amazon.

Chadwick Johnson Revisited

Chadwick Johnson

I first brought you the sweet EP Soul Rising by gifted vocalist, Chadwick Johnson. You can find that post here. While I loved the music, I had a few questions about a couple of the songs, and they were answered by the man himself, Chadwick Johnson. I am always moved when an artist takes a moment to read the blog, and respond to a question or two I might have.

Chadwick Johnson

I got an email and Chadwick told me Soul Rising was dedicated the EP to his stepfather, Jeff Moll, who passed away unexpectedly last November. That explains why the project seemed so close to his heart, to be sure! In fact, he mentions that just before he sang the touching "Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground", written by the great Willie Nelson.

The EP was produced by Matt Bobb and the artist himself. In fact, they also wrote "Stain On My Heart" and "I'm Gonna Live" together for Chadwick to record. He also told me the song "Everywhere You Are" was written by Kalani Queypo and Kyle Puccia. Here is a video featuring a great live performance of the moving "Stain On My Heart" from the Release Party in Los Angeles.

To purchase your digital download of Soul Rising, go to iTunes or Amazon. To purchase the physical CD, complete with dedication and more pictures, go to Amazon. And his cover of Lady Gaga's "Edge of Glory" is only available on the digital download version. You can hear the music being featured on Jango Radio.

Chadwick Johnson • Soul Rising

Chadwick Johnson - Soul Rising

I can't tell you how excited I was to discover there was new music out from a favorite of mine, Chadwick Johnson. Soul Rising was released earlier this month, giving me the opportunity to hear it a couple of times. The seven-song release is either and expanded EP, or a short album, but no matter how you want to describe it, gorgeous must be included. This is not the first time I've been able to feature Chadwick on the blog. A year ago, he won an OUTMusic Award for "Intoxicated", called the OUTStanding Dance song in the 7th Annual Award Ceremony. Chadwick has caught my attention earlier when I heard his EP Live & Unplugged, a three-song EP that blew me away. Including a stripped down acoustic version of the dance hit. I was definitely a fan, eagerly anticipating the chance to hear more.

The album kicks off with the beautiful song by Willie Nelson, "Angel Flying Too Close to the Ground". The song was sung by Willie in the 1981 film, Honeysuckle Rose. There is an inspirational, almost a gospel feel, a perfect showcase for Chadwick's gorgeous voice. The second track, "I'm Gonna Live", has a more personal feel. I am not sure if this was written by Chadwick or just a song I don't know, but it is another brilliant choice. The chorus soars, as could be expected with Chadwick's rich vocals. "Unchained Melody" is about as iconic a song as there is out there. The song was written in 1955 with music by Alex North and lyrics by Hy Zaret. It was made famous by the Righteous Brothers in a 1965 recording that many consider the best recording of the 20th century, and maybe ever. While it has been covered by many, Chadwick strips it back to the bones, and gives it the rich emotional value the song asks for. There are not many who could hit the notes written with such depth and fullness. While "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough" was written and performed originally as a duet, Chadwick makes it work beautifully as a solo turn. The song, released in 1992 by Patty Smyth and Don Henley, written by Smyth and Flen Burtnik, has an aching heartache that is impossible to deny. With a simple acoustic guitar backing the vocals, the song takes on a confessional quality. There is such a beauty in the simplicity of the production, reminding me how great this song was to start with. "Stain On My Heart", the next track, was originally featured on an album by Swiss singer Stefanie Heinzmann. I had never heard it before, but love the way it delivers Pop in grand proportions, reveling in the pain love can bring. While he is heaping on the Pop, the sixth cut is "Everywhere You Are", another song of which I am not familiar. Once again, the song starts with a simple treatment, asking the singer step up to deliver the heart of the song, love. And Chadwick delivers, leaving me feeling like he's given me a warm embrace. It would be nigh on impossible to not know "Edge of Glory", the bombastic Pop megahit written by Lady Gaga, Fernando Garibay and DJ White Shadow, and released by Gaga. The song opens with a soft piano laying the groundwork to allow Chadwick to soar in the chorus, giving life to a song that is often delivered with a hollow enthusiasm. Here is a clip of Chadwick performing the song live on the Jimmy Kimmel Stage in Los Angeles.

I love Soul Rising, a delicious banquet of Pop tastiness. With an assortment of classic songs along with ones that are new to me, it keeps me coming back time and again. I hope we get some videos of Chadwick perofming the songs, for I truly just can't get enough. You can find it on iTunes and Amazon. For more about Chadwick Johnson, visit his official website. Great Albums of 2011

Casey Stratton Photobucket
Chadwick
Clockwise: Casey Stratton, Gregory Douglass, Chadwick, and Justin Utley.

You'd think with all the posts so far, how could there still be great music that was released in 2011? It is easy, you just listen to the music by the four outstanding men above, how put out wonderful music whenever they sit with a microphone. And, if I am not mistaken, they are all out and proud men who also happen to look very good in their pictures...

That is certainly true for Casey Stratton, who has been making great music since he was quite young, releasing his first EP, Driving To The Moon, in 1995. This year he released two albums, Hear The City and The Vigil. The latter was a response to the loss of his beloved pet, Henry, and it is just beautiful. The former, Hear The City, is a wonderful and so evocative.

I swear that Casey writes his music so that it is addictive, and I must have it all. You can purchase Hear The City at Casey's online store, iTunes or Amazon.

Another man whose music is just totally irresistible to me is Vermont's own Gregory Douglass. It still annoys me I have yet to be able to see him perform live, but hope I get to rectify that very soon. His latest album, Lucid, is a moody and vital work, with honesty pouring off it. I am particularly fond of the song Dream Come True. In the video below Gregory sings Lucid from the latest release.

You can purchase Lucid at Gregory's online store, iTunes, or Amazon.

Well, once you get past Justin Utley's Hulk-like build and dashing good looks, you get to know that he is also a talented singer/songwriter. His vivid and uplifting music touches me so, and let's me know he has lived a life that has not always been easy, but will always be a path for growth. The former-Mormon sings from the heart, and that can't be missed. Watch as he sings Stand For Something from Nothing This Real.

You can purchase Nothing This Real at Justin's online store, iTunes, or Amazon.

I happened across the music of Chadwick while working on this blog, and can't believe I hadn't heard his amazing voice before. The crispness of his tone is amazing, and how he manages to use it while singing great songs is impressive. His latest album, Live & Unplugged, shows off that voice, allowing it to tell the story with simple instrumentation. Watch as he sings What About Love from Live & Unplugged. The song was written by Brian Allen, Sheron Alton, and Jim Vallance and originally performed by the legendary rock band, Heart.

You can purchase Live & Unplugged on iTunes or Amazon.

OUTstanding R&B, Dance & Folk/Country Songs

OUTMusic 2010

I am continuing the series to spotlight the award winning entries for Rock, Pop and Hip-Hop for the 7th Annual OUTmusic Awards. The Awards were given in New York City.

I cannot express how pleased I am to announce that the winner of the OUTstanding R&B Song is The Gay Warrior Song by Nhojj. The gifted singer/songwriter picked up his second win in the category, having won last year for Love. Nhojj has been featured on this blog before (5 times, to be exact), and will undoubtedly again. He makes great music! You can buy the single on iTunes here, on Bandcamp here, and on Amazon.com here. While you are there, check out his other music - it is well-worth buying. You can discover more about the sexy man by checking out his official website here. Give a listen to the winning single, The Gay Warrior's Song, below.

Chadwick

To be named the OUTstanding Dance Song is impressive, as it is a hotly contested division. But when you give a listen to Intoxicated by Chadwick, you will know why he was victorious. You can purchase the single on iTunes here and on Amazon.com here. I don't really know a lot about the musician, but I like this song, and think I need to check the rest out, too. And it doesn't hurt that he is a yummy guy, you know? For more about Chadwick, check out his official website here. But first, give the song your ear, and it might just steal your heart.

Well, this handsome and sexy guy has been featured in a couple of posts on this blog, for as good-looking as he is, it is his talent that really shines through. When Justin Utley sings, he brings it straight from the heart to touch your soul. He was named the OUTstanding Folk/Country Song for his composition, Stand For Something. You can find it on iTunes here, on Amazon.com here, and on CD Baby here. Just a tip - I purchased the Extended Single, with the amazing Stand For Something as well as 3 additional cuts, all sung live. Highly recommended! I LOVE Runaway. You can find more about Justin by checking his official website here.

How great was it 2 of three of the winners have been featured on the blog already? In the next installment, I will feature the winners in the Jazz, Soundtrack, and Male Chorus categories. And I am pleased to say one of them have been featured here before! Can't wait! Don't forget to visit the official website of The Awards!
